Trotlines

What do you mean you use soap? What kind of soap and how big do you put a chunk on?
Zote soap. Big, pink bar of soap that has a high percentage of animal fat. I've been using chunks about the size of a sugar cube.

All I've caught is small channels. Biggest was maybe 6lbs. But honestly, I prefer the 1-2lb fish anyway. They skin easily, and the filets are a nice size.

Where does one find Zote soap?

It's actually a good soap as well, believe it or not

Yep. Cheap, strong, and if you look at the ingredients list it's just tallow (animal fat) lye, scent, and dye. Very basic. The theory is that the cats are attracted to the fat. Some guys mix blood or some other attractant in. My thoughts are I'd you're going to go through too much effort you're better off with cut bait or live.

I can get 220 cubes out of a $1 bar of soap. Cut it at the kitchen table with my wife sitting next to me. Prebait 50 hooks and put them in a bucket, and go out to my main line that evening and swap the baited hooks with the empty ones. Rinse and repeat for a dollar a day, 5 days a week.

Cheap, easy, clean, and catches fish. Screenshot_20200504-152628_Gallery.jpg

Can you put some photos of your rig up? How do you stow and transport? Im real close to a creek and now with the canoe going this sounds like fun way to spend time with with the kids.
Are all your baits on the bottom or would having bait suspended up in the water column 6-10 inches be better? Ive never done it.....25 hook is the max to be legal as non commercial here in fla. I was thinking alternating bait on the bottom, floater, bottom, etc.....
Any info on the how and why of your system would be appreciated.

I'll take some pics tomorrow. I'm not 100% where I want to be, but I have a pretty good setup I think

If you ain’t fishing with Catalba worms you’re not doing yourself justice. BEST CATFISH BAIT HANDS DOWN! There’s no arguing it.
Trick is finding the worms, they’ve seen to become scarce in the last few years. No need to thank me just mail me a bottle of scotch whiskey once you’ve filled the freezer.

I had 2 cataulpa trees in the yard at house I lived in the last 2 years. I've tried them and never could catch much if anything on them. But more than once I'd have people stop and ask if they could pick them because they were the best bait ever.

Here on trotlines goldfish work the best, live bream and minnows are the usual bait. Will use some soap now and then or beef liver from a cow we've butchered usually works good too.

We use a combination of beef melt or cut bait (pogeys) and live bait. The cheap hot dog soaked in garlic juice and whatever else you want to put in the ziplock works well and is convenient to acquire. I know people that fish the Mississippi up by Vicksburg that swear by river shrimp and crawfish. Those fellas catch some big catfish.

Matt Jones' video Get the Net is a great video on trotlines. He's a commercial guy that catches a ton of fish. Dont really have the spots to run lines here so limb lines all I get to do.

I'm learning up on it currently.....trying to decide the best configuration for my local creek. Surprisingly lots of info to read through and try to decide on how to rig.
The creek I'm in is max width 30yd and max depth I've found is 8-12 in the deeper holes at low tide. Anybody with similar fishing spots who would like to explain and show their rig would be awesome....

If you have a lot of low hanging branches or acces to some pvc conduit you can run limb lines, unless you're dead set on a trotline. Buy some tarred nylon (doesn't have to be tarred), masons line works too. A few sinkers (weight depends on current or use no sinkers) I've used nuts, bolts or whatever I can tie on the line too for weight. Tie a loop in one end of the line with weight and hook on the other and about 12" leader. Make your loop big enough to fit your bait, hook and weight through. Make your lines arm spread length long or longer depending on branches/pvc pipe in the bank. Girth hitch your lines around the branch or pipe and I like to mark mine with some bright duct tape so I can see em (plus ours here are supposed to be tagged.) Springy branches or pvc are probably the best because they'll set the hook like a fishing pole but aren't necessary. Make sure the current won't take your rig down into a pile of branches and get all tangled plus it's easier checking em on the downstream side and going into the current. Tie on a swivel if you're getting into big cats or your line is wimpy. I use a pool noodle/pipe insulation to wrap my lines around for storage plus if I drop it off the kayak it floats and it's easy to retrieve. I use cut bait mainly but might give the soap a try for pan fryers. Good luck!

Cut carp/suckers works really good. I have fun bowfishing for the carp then cutting em up and using em for catfish bait later. If ya leave the skin on the carp its really hard to get off the hook and makes the cats work at it. Seems like the size of the chunk of carp and hook will determine the size of cat ya want to catch.
suckers are catfish candy. we put on the biggest ones we can catch whole and drop em down. hold on tight!

never tried carp but that makes perfect sense. i always here carp splashin where we go catfishin. you got me thinkin now...

Some of the best bites on flatheads I've had were on goldfish which are carp

The river I fish is very similar, it's not that deep but just in a few spots, probably averages 5-6 ft. Best places to fish it are on the downstream side of a shoal. Right where it gets back 3-4 ft deep off that shoal is where we put our lines, running parallel to the shoal, usually try to tie off on roots or trees but sometimes have to drive a post in the bank. Hooks are 18-24 inches apart, drops are 6-8 inches from the line and the weights will be 12-14 inches from the line. Like the bait to be 6 inches or so off the bottom. Usually use goldfish or minnows, but beef liver, stink bait, hot dogs and soap all work.

If you have less than 15ft, depth of the line don't matter in my experience. I run mine right across the top without weights if outboards aren't an issue. Makes the line much easier to run, and less issue with snags.

I would look for the "cleanest" water with the best current (assuming you're on a slow moving system like mine) and lots of cover. Log jams are awesome for holding cats. Forks are good too.Take a rod with some punch bait and a slip bobber and go fish a bit. Use that to hone in on the areas that produce a few fish. I've also had luck running some yoyos and limb lines to test out an area and justify running a line.

I've had some funerals and surgeries going on this past week, but this evening I'll try to actually get some pics and videos up. No promises, but if @swampsnyper ever gets his vessel license we might be doing a youtube trotline contest. I have a feeling that guy might know how to put the "here fishie fishies" on some cats.

Thanks guys....I love learning a new outdoor activity but hearing from the more experienced usually saves money and time.....I am an experienced fisherman just unfamiliar with the different gear and thought process
