Turkey Load

The Winchester longbeard loads held a good pattern but was hitting off paper 8-10” high. Im not spending double the price for a load that won’t hit point of aim. I’m not worried about shooting 60 yards either. The whole point is to call them in close. What’s the fun in shooting that far? You might as well use a rifle.

Win Long beards may be to tight of a pattern out of that imho
I would look for win double x in a 5 or 6 probably a 6 and go for there.

I used Federal Heavyweight #7 in a 3" 12ga shell. Patterned great out of m Benelli SBEII (honestly, better in the stock full choke than some of the super-duper-tight chokes I had). These are the older 15g/cc loads, and not the newer 18g/cc TSS loads.

Roger's Sporting Goods has them on sale for $15/5 pack. Good deal considering they used to go for $30. Still more expensive than Remington Nitro 5s, but not as bad as some of the newer TSS shells.

I have a pile of shells if we get together you can try out.
Bring a fresh shoulder! Lol

I didn’t specify but my 870 is just an express so I’ll be limited to 2 3/4 shells anyway. Gonna get two boxes and see what they do.

Turkey opens up at Bankhead this weekend, lets go man!

When it comes to choosing a load, it comes down to knowing your equipment. You don't "need" to spend the money on a 3.5" #4 shot shell because a company labeled a turkey load. You can kill turkey effrctively with about any legal load, provided you know how its patterning and you know the range limitations. I prefer a 2 3/4 #6 high brass, its lethal with my current setup out to 45 yards. I have not taken a shot that far and mostly will not. My daughter took her first gobbler last year with a 2 3/4 #7 small game load @ 18 yards, she's 9 and can't handle much more from a 12ga. Just use what you got, and shoot before you hunt, know what your limits are.
I know a couple serious turkey hunters that use a 410.

870 supermag? I shoot winchester super x 3.5 tkey loads out of mine....reaches out and touches them

I use 3in 7.5&9 TSS blend in my 12ga. It is wicked at 40yds, so much so that I would rather them be close to 30 yds to shoot them. In my.410 I use number 9TSS and wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger on one at 35yds with it!

Well I screwed up and bought 2 3/4 loads because I thought that’s all my gun could shoot. When I got home it said up to 3” on the barrel. Live and learn I guess.

Sounds good BUT!
When I was getting ready to talk to the wife about hunting my daughter called to let me know my son in law was sick and was trying to get tested for Corona which absolutely sucks since me and him hung out shooting last Saturday about 5 or 6 hours!!
Dang it!
I am going to call the hotline and see it they would consider me exposed I think it would be irresponsible for me not to hold off until I hear the results of his test.

No good man! Hope you and your family get though it all safely!!

Those 2 3/4 will kill you a turkey just fine. Sometimes with the magnum loads, when you super tight chokes, it can cause shot deformation. My m3500 w/ Carlson super full patterns better @ 45 then my 870 w/ jughead and 3" nitro mags. Completely different setups, I know, that's the point. When it comes to your gun, you gotta find what it likes! It's all about that shot density at different ranges.
Of course you could always go with a 3006 in wv, it holds shot density real well out past 200!

Thank you and the rest of the well wishes. I should have text you because I totally derailed your thread! Lol

From what I remember I have a bunch of 2 2/4 and 3” turkey loads.

I still use whatever I have available but mostly the copper plated lead (cheap) Winchester 3" #6's. For close calling coyote's I purchased a Kick's Dead Coyote choke several years ago. It was manufactured to shoot the HeviShot "T" sized coyote load well but in my experience with this choke for my gun (Ithaca Model 37 Turkeyslayer), it patterns anything I put through it quite well. I had the forcing cone lengthened in the barrel of this gun by a local gunsmith years ago and I believe it helped somewhat but it was already backbored at the choke by Ithaca at the time they sold this particular model turkeyslayer in the later 1990's.

Fake News Shout Out: I said in this post a "Kick"s Dead Coyote Choke, I was wrong, it is a Carlson's "Dead Coyote" choke that I have on my Turkeyslayer. Not a Kick's.
