TURKEY TURKEY TURKEY

Seeing stutters in local fields for more than a week on a daily basis. Birds in western NC are still flocked up. A friend witnessed actual breeding in his field this week.

Very cool.. Im getting excited.. we see a ton of birds around here. We have a solid white gobbler running around as well.

Nice FL bird

I’ve been waiting all yr for our Central FL opener & my wife scheduled our spring break reservations for family beach week starting yesterday (opening day) instead of Monday like I had planned

Maybe next yr I can finally be out for opening morning

ok - so I hit Academy Sports and picked up a set of decoys, a Primos mouth call that I can actually make crappy sounding calls with LOL, and also grabbed a Primos slate and box call to start. I am slowly getting the hang of the slate and after trimming the mouth call I'm able to consistently produce sound, but have a long way to go to make it sound decent. Been watching Tony Ruiz you tube videos - very helpful. Was good to see video one was getting over the gag reflex haha - definitely resonated ;) I also grabbed an owl locator and ordered a piliated woodpecker locator. All htat's left is the Stoeger - which should go down this week after investing in some wife brownie points over the weekend. She think I'm insane with this mouth call LOL

I use Longbeard #5 also. I run mine through a Stoeger M3000 with a Carlson Longbeard choke tube and it’s plain sick. Have to shoot it like a rifle to 30. Throws a very useable pattern to 65 but turkey are meant to be shot in the face at very close range.
This is my exact setup!

I waited till 30 minutes after full sunrise then hit him with a fly down cackle while beating my hands against my leg (little trick I use on close roosted birds).

This is a GREAT tactic!! I love doing this as well. However, I use my hat. It has worked for me quite a few times. Using the hat instead of your hands I think adds a little more realistic sound due to the clothe material. You can't be shy about it either. The harder and louder you do it the better. Their wings are loud. Right after you mimic the fly down with your hat, hit your hat absolutely as hard as you can on the leaves on the ground, just like a bird sounds when hitting the ground from fly down. It may not work every single time, depending on the mood of the bird, but it will absolutely work some of the time! So fun!

@kelly.jayp just keep practicing! Keep in mind that all wild turkeys don't sound the same. I've heard some hens that sound absolutely awful if you compared them to competition callers (lol). On many occasions I've heard what I thought just had to be another hunter calling very poorly, only to have a hen round the corner. Calling doesn't have to be pretty to be effective.

a buddy of mine said the same thing.... that's a relief. practicing a little each day - esp in the truck driving around. My toddler thinks it's a riot :)

Get a push button call ... simple and sounds good . I d rather one call we’ll then ten calls half well

Y'all makin' fun of me since I was sick for the alabammer opener, aint'cha?

Dadgum birds...I did a little scouting Sunday evening and saw some good tracks. Should have stuck around and tried to roost them. I love turkeys, but it always turns into deer scouting eventually.

Unless you feel that you’ll shoot 3.5’s I would get the 3000. I find the 3” kicks plenty hard

Had the birds hammering back to the owl call again. This evening it was just me and the turkeys. No help from the resident owls. If only my turkey call sounded as good as my owl call I may have a chance Wednesday morning.

@Bwhana has me nearly talked into a 3020 and going with TSS - it's compelling for sure when you think of weight savings / lighter kick and still have the devastation of the TSS. But man that **** is $$$$$$$ $45 for 5 - I want a gun that can do anything - so I'm going back and forth in my head - what I like about the 3500 is the ability to change the cartridge size

Best thing to do in the spring besides scout public land here in MN imo!! I only chase em with the bow tho, extremely challenging and it allows me to hunt them the entire spring with an over the counter tag!

The tss is appealing but like you said $$$$. I don’t waterfowl so I choose the 3000 with walnut furniture and I only turkey hunt or run buck if I’m trying to pack kill hogs off a feeder. Either way I think You’ll be satisfied. I love my Stoeger.

It's just $ and you can't take it with you! TSS is awesome turkey medicine. It really is not too much more than the Hevi Shot I was using before and if you miss, you can't blame it on the load or gun.

Haven't seen a thing yet in Michigan. Usually don't start seeing birds on my property until the toms get territorial claim their turf. They are still flocked up by me.
