Waterproof Spotlight for Canoe/Boat Nav

I’d honestly in that case after seeing Wyatt_burp’s set up I’d run 2 cube lights (spot flood combo) with that battery set up.
Yeah, I just don't like wiring stuff in a small boat. If I wired something I'd want the ability to turn it on/off from the stern seat, which would mean running wiring the full length of the boat. Right now I can cartop the boat or launch it without using the trailer. That gets harder to do as you start to add stuff. I just picked up a Maglite ML50L at walzmart for $30. We'll see if 600 lumens and a tight beam is enough to navigate by this evening.

A buddy of mine swears by a predator light with a scope mount attached to a 5ft long piece of .75" pvc with a T at the end. He uses it as a shallow water anchor, and it lets him hold the light 5ft up without having to hold his arm up in the air. I may give that a shot if the maglite lets me down tonight.

So the $30 3 C-cell maglite at Walmart is awesome. Not sure how it will hold up over time, but I've never had one of the old ones tear up. We'll see.

I ran about a mile down a little log-filled creek, out to the big lake for a bit to open her up to full-throttle, and then turned around and came back. Plenty of light, but I was holding it up in the air the whole time. Think I'm going to build something like my buddy's rig and call it done.

Here's what he uses.

C batteries are the bane of my existence... you may be happier upgrading to the rechargeable version from maglite and save money in the long run...

So this is what I slapped together for the time being

The 600 lumens is plenty bright for my uses. Those C batteries aren't sexy or light, but they give it a 16 hour run time on high and I can keep spares in the boat box. I've had mixed results with rechargable batteries. Maybe the tech is better now, but I know Cs work.

Being able to hold the light up in the air without a sore shoulder is nice. I can turn it wherever I want to look.

For abluy $35, I think i could do worse. Light and a shallow water anchor. Could probably be used as a decoy hook too.

I use an olight seeker 2 pro. Mounted to a fishing rod holder on the tracks toward the bow of my kayak. I can reach up there and turn it if need be, but I usually just use my headlamp to look to the sides. I like that PVC rig you made nutter. Gonna throw one of them together for my set up today.

And you could always beat a zombie to death with it, if necessary.

Look I didn’t read all the comments but I’ve spent my entire life hunting out of boats. I don’t own and never hunted off a 4 wheeler. I have extensive experience in this area.

If you are wanting a good light don’t mess around, get a coon hunting light. I’m not sure of one that is completely water proof but I run at night, in the rain, and they do fine. If you got a shiny nickel to spare get one that is fully contained to a helmet. Meaning be like Pinocchio”there are no strings on me”. The freedom of being wireless and able walk anywhere and have the power of the sun at your command is badass. You’ll never go back. Some even have red and green accessory lights to compliment.

I will say this, if you want a long lasting light go LED as most are nowadays. However if you are into serious frog catching you want a halogen bulb. Frogs don’t like LED light they’ll jump before you get to them. Most halogen lights still run off a deep cycle 12vlt. Battery though. Meaning you’ll have to have wire and alligator clamps to connect to the battery.

Let me know if you got questions.

Frogs don't like LEDs, huh? That might explain why so many of mine "break" before I can get a gig in them.

I've looked at coon-hunting lights before. They're just kinda pricey. May have to bite the bullet though.
