What am I doing wrong? Stand set

Being a new whitetail searcher I am all confused with the equipment. My last trip I went to set my LW and could not get a secure set. I would set the stand, tighten up everything and then try to cam it in place. For the life of me I could not get the V bracket and the bottom teeth to set together. Either the V bracket would set or the bottom teeth but not the two together. It’s an old LW and I do plan on changing out to the batwing but sheesh. What am I doing, or not doing? Thanks

Toe hook it as stated above then lift the platform vertical and lift the platform up the tree until the versa strap is 2” above being horizontally level then reset the platform. Toe hook works most the time , but sometimes doing what I recommend fixes any issues with the batwing and the platform not having good contact.

Are you only attaching the top strap?

If not don't put both straps on at the same time. It will cause it to not cam properly. Once cammed with just top strap and it's set, then you attach bottom strap, if you choose to use both. I personally don't and only use top strap only.

Here’s how I do it, usually don’t have problems. Sometimes it can be the trees fault and not your own, I’d first start by saying even if it’s an inch or two in one direction or the other. If you can’t get it to cam, move the stand some. Doesn’t have to be a lot.

Hang top strap, tighten it down as much as possible. I put some effort into it for sure. Make sure it’s as level around the tree as poissble. Then I put my second strap on but lose enough to allow for the stand to cam. I do a pre cam if I feel the need. I’ll tighten the strap down, do a caming motion on the stand. Then I climb on and i do a hard toe hook. I’ll even bounce a touch if I have too. Then I tighten the second strap up and you’re done.

I am using a stand it’s the old lone wolf assault. Pre batwing and I believe it only has the one versa button. I would toe hook but it’s really not safe to even get on prior. I set my saddle platform super easy and hit the struggle bus with this. At home I set it just fine and ran into a huge issue hunting.

What do u mean by you would toe hook but it’s not safe to get on prior? One you should be tied off before stepping onto the stand, and or during your toe hook. Two you toe hook once it’s strapped up and on the tree. Just trying to help pal! But im confused by what u mean

No worries. I am tied off but the stand is extremely loose and I have a healthy fear of heights. I would tighten the strap and adjust. Tighten again and repeat. In no way would I even put half my weight on it without fear of it coming down. Then I’m just a human tether ball looking ridiculous in a tree and trying to bugle a buck in.

I’ll keep that in mind but for a week of whitetail I have about all the equipment I could buy. I’ll have to make due with what I have.

Here is how I set every hang-on I have ever used and I have never not been able to get one to set tight. Strap stand to the tree, fold platform up, lift so the strap is horizontal and tighten as much as you can, pull the stand down before camming platform, cam platform, fold platform back up and lift until the strap is again horizontal and retighten strap, pull stand down hard and re-cam platform. That is with only one strap. Add second strap if you choose at this point and pull tight. If that doesnt get it tight, check the tree because there is probably something about the shape of the tree that is the issue where you are trying to set the stand.

If you haven’t already practice at ground height on a bunch of diff trees. Look for diff size, leans and types of bark. I also have one of those older lonewolf stands that I added a second versa button too down low bc when I used it I would leave it out on a small piece of private I had and liked the security of 2 straps

I practice at my house but I live in pines. A pine tree is like freaking Velcro. I could travel a bit and maybe find cottonwood or aspen. Like I said, I’ll be switching out the. V bracket for the batwing and I can add a bottom strap easily. Maybe it was just a weird shape in the tree. I got the saddle platform to lock in easy but that’s a smaller footprint.

Random question, what straps are you using? Are they og LW straps? Your stand shouldn’t move a ton if u have it tight enough. Yea it will slip some but shouldn’t be a lot. Ever thought about adding a cam style strap with hooks on it for around the bottom of the stand?

I believe it’s the original strap. I got the stand and as I have been told, it’s one of the 8.5# Assaults. It had very little wear when I got it. I got the strap as tight as possible. I do think I will add a strap to the bottom. Seems to be the easiest and safest.

I used one strap on my LW's for years. Most of the time I could get it fairly snug. Every once in a while, the layout of the tree and branches prevented what I would call ideal tightness. I was younger and dumber so I just hunted anyway. Then I went to two straps. That made a BIG difference. It Always got tight. Really tight. Sometimes TOO tight on that bottom strap. It takes a couple of times to get it right but once you do it you'll know what your looking for. I would never hunt w/ a LW again without a bottom strap Again. Rock solid!
