what the heck kind of irresponsible bs is this?

I've always thought it better to take the fawn than the mother the fawn is with. If still young, the fawn will suffer a lot more without the mother than the mother would without the fawn. I see zero wrong with legally harvesting a young deer. But the public doesn't understand this and so I wouldn't advertise it.
I’ve always thought shoot the doe over the fawn because the fawn has a longer life and more fawns to raise itself. Just 2 ways of looking at it. I say if you wanna shoot it, turn an arrow loose. The best way to make a guy shoot old deer is let him shoot 5 or 6 young ones

I agree, but I dont care what the public understands, my son harvested the animal, prayed over the animal, gave thanks to God for the harvest and ate the animal. This is where the disconnect is.
Genesis 9:2 And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered. (KJV)

True dat, how about lobbing arced shots above brush into the vitals of animals which only ran 40 yards???? He had practiced and practiced and practiced those shots, therefore they were ethical. If I had taken those shots they would be unethical ya see!

Well, with these stories and even youtube videos there is some selection going on. Fred Bear probably didn't write about the times that shot didn't work out. Same with youtube guys that kill a deer at 70 yards. They don't upload the videos where they miss or wound.

No, ignorance creates these lobbys! The crazy cat lady that lets the squirrels nest in her lawn cushions, the woman who has only seen packaged meat, the vegan who thinks that meat is murder... the list goes on. Well let me tell you meat is murder, and unless you are a vegetarian, then you need to face the facts, for you to eat meat of any kind an animal must die!!!
There are plenty of people in the middle whose perception of hunters is up for grabs.

The idealized image of hunter is frequently a conservationist with a deep love of the outdoors and a respect for the quarry they pursue. The reality falls quite short in many cases.

Whether you like it or not, your actions and how you comport yourself reflects on all hunters and the public perception thereof. With suburban sprawl and fewer hunters overall, dismissively ignoring this will not benefit you or your prospects long-term.

It's perverse how frequently people work against their own interests in the name of owning the other side.

Sadly only the successful hits were recorded...no one should be promoting any type of shot that takes “skill” or “practice” when “statistics” are “favoring” that just a deer would be wounded and suffer a painful death

True, but I usually don’t brag about the animals I have wounded either, whether I took a 5 yard shot or a 30 yard shot!

Oh by the way my 11 year son shot a nubbin buck this weekend with his Crossbow and I just ate some reverse seared backstrap on a spring green salad for supper and it was amazing, I could not taste the difference between it and a “mature” buck LOL!!

You lost me at salad. What a way to ruin some venison.
My 6 year old daughter told me to shoot the smaller ones, more tender she said.

We have a lot of coyotes here anymore and not a lot of agriculture to fatten a fawn with. A very young looking one probably won't make the winter on its own (starved or ripped apart by 'yotes), but maybe I'm underestimating them.

This one struck a nerve for me. By definition, unethical means "against the rules, not in accords with the standards of a profession, and lacking moral principles." So what was irresponsible or unethical in his shot? It was totally legal, he has practiced at that distance and beyond, and at the end of the day had he wounded and lost it, it is still just a freaking deer, not some high $ value item, and the coyotes would eat it just like they would if it died from old age, disease, or being hit by a car. If he or anyone else chooses to shoot beyond what you consider your max, what difference does it make to you, and who gets to determine what is ethical? We don't question the mentality of guys that bought Mantis saddles and thought they were the greatest thing ever or the ethics of the company selling them as such (ok, strike that one!), but have to do the chest thump holier than thou salute because someone shot further than you can or will and got his animal in the proces? Again, its just a deer, and none of you would say a word if someone takes an "unethical" shot in a squirrel or other small game. If its legal, let it fly and it may die!

Just a deer??? Find a new sport bro

That sounds real philosophical, but if I could

I was suburb hunting once and two does came in each with a set of twins... I shot one twin from each family, nobody loses a mom, each mom keeps a kid. In the moment I followed the same math you’re doing here.

I’m all for harassing guys that take long / marginal shots. Back in the day the other people in the tribe knocked you around when you were out of line, there’s no objective truth just a pile of interpretations, and if a bunch of bowhunters give younger / inexperienced hunters a hard time for stupid shots we’re better for it. The more we learn about animals the more we should appreciate their richness of experience and their lives. The less we do that the easier it is to let arrows fly and hope one hits. It’s ok to both admire Fred Bear and evolve too.

If you had a chance to plant a garden and have a decent harvest to feed your family, or wait until the next year to plant a garden when the ground would be more fertile, what would YOU do?

Well said my friend, spoken like a true gentleman!

It’s 2020 not the depression or the apocalypse this attitude gives anti hunters ammo

And if you was a decent hunter shouldn’t you be able to get close to the game you are pursuing? Or just hope you are a good shot?

Yes Fred Bear was very unethical taking shots at running game...they both lived in times that supported a lot of things that were straight wrong...this is coming from a hillbilly that lives 60 miles from the nearest super store or Walmart...

We humans sure have evolved fast! Fred Bear who was deemed one of the greatest conservationist and advocate for bowhunting was fine with shooting over a 100 yards with his recurve at big game, and now if a guy takes a 62 yard shot with a highly technical highly accurate compound bow he is unequivocally wrong in doing so. What changed in 40 years?

Instead of just shaming someone, why don't you type up an in depth explanation of what is and isn't ethical in the bow hunting world and why that is the case? That might actually convince someone to be more ethical, rather than just shaming somebody to make yourself feel better.

Y'all are too easy and predictable! I told a friend about this thread as an easy target before I posted, so thanks for tonight's entertainment, the football game wasn't worth watching. For the record, I actually fall in the middle on this topic and the comment about Bambis was just to provoke thought. I personally think they taste better!

I think

Blood smudges on your pants going into a gas station gives anti hunters ammo. Wake up!!! The opposing side will always find something to criticize if they have any sense. I understand the intention of your post and my point is that some people (believe it or not) can shoot way better than you. Maybe that guy, maybe not! Cameron Haynes can chase down a deer until it cannot walk anymore, prop it up against a wall, and walk back 100 yards and shoot it in The heart while jogging in place! Never take your limitations in account when scrutinizing other people!!

Me too!

Fred Bear made a living off of shots he made just like that guy who made that 62 yard shot, like that bomar guy who did the 120 yard shot just like Chris bee taking 80 yard shots just like John Eberhart made a living selling scent lock...just like politics make a living selling hysteria??? Make myself feel better? I’ll feel my tags taking easy shots and I’ll support my family in rural U.S.A...does supporting false idols make you feel better?
