A Hunter's Heart: Honest Essays on Blood Sport

The Sacred Art of Hunting : Myths, Legends, and the Modern Mythos

In Defense of Hunting: Yesterday and Today

I find myself re-reading these three above in particular every few years.

In other news, I would recommend Illusions by Richard Bach and Even Cowgirls Get The Blues and Still Life With Woodpecker (Tom Robbins)

Many others ...
Damn typos ...

Is Paul Schaffer still alive? I have his book from way back “Treestand Hunting.” Back when he had Screaming Eagle treestands and his trad bow mail order store. Great stuff back in the day!! In many ways the precursor to a lot of the many small niche companies popping up now. I wonder why he shut down?
You mean Paul BRUNNER not Schaffer.
Brunner is still alive and has some wild stories to tell. He almost died in a horrible camp accident several years ago. Can't remember the details but it was some sort of fire or explosion. He was badly burned. I heard him on a podcast recently...Stickboys? Or maybe The Push??

Any good books on hunting deer in Deep South? Or that are more applicable to Deep South terrain?
This isn't a book, but it is the lesson's learned from a lifetime of hunting Louisiana by Mr. Warren Womack, a member here. I like to go back and reread this prior to each season. I have gotten more how to from this than a stack of the hunting books I have read over the years.

Thanks. I believe I corrected myself about this in a later post. He used to own Screaming Eagle treestands and I still have one of his excellent quivers. He was affiliated with the Wensel Brothers at one point too I think when they first moved out to Montana back in the 1980’s.

Yeah, I saw that you corrected as I read down the thread after I replied.
I was a Screaming Eagle junkie. I was already a loyal customer when they had just the one store in Montana. Then they announced that they'd be opening another store somewhere. I went on to lean that "somewhere" was about 8 miles from my home!! I spent a lot of time (and money!) in that unbelievable store.
From time to time, Paul would come there and the Wensel brothers also made a few appearances. The seminars were fantastic.
Sadly that store closed far too soon. There just wasn't enough of a trad market in those days.
Now, there's a McDonalds in that spot. Talk about going right down the toilet......

Wow I never realized they opened an eastern shore store! If I would have known that I would have went down to see it. It was tough competing with the low price mail order compound stores back in the day like Bowhunters’s Discount Warehouse etc. For $500 you could have a full bow setup a couple of cheap but heavy hang on stands and some camo and be hunting. The only trad bows that were acceptable back then were customs and I’m like, I’d rather get a compound and up my odds a bit for one half the price of an Assenheimer Recurve. I remember Paul recognizing that donut hole in the market and offering a lower cost Damon-Howatt recurve n his catalog though.

The ARRL Ametuer Extra class exam textbook. It's the third license, I'm too OCD to just get the first two and not do the third

Not reading anything, but after ditching Comcast, I’ve become a YouTube junkie. I love watching anything saddle hunting and knot tying etc….. For background noise, I listen to Steve who’s channel is howtohunt….bunch of Bigfoot type stories being shared.
There is a deer study, I can’t remember the name, but they track several big bucks over a long period of time and show EXACTLY where they were……..I think in Louisiana? Boy it’s eye opening and my scouting has completely changed. I highly recommend it!

The Filthy Thirteen about the escapades across Europe by Jake McNiece and his ragtag group of paratroopers 101sr Airborne (Pathfinder). It was the basis for the movie The Dirty Dozen. He had no use for military traditions but dealt death to the Nazi boys for sure.

Nature's Best Hope: A New Approach to Conservation That Starts in Your Yard
by Douglas W. Tallamy

What is everyone reading in the offseason?

I just started Bowhunting Pressured Whitetails by John and Chris Eberhart. What should I read next?
That's a great book. I think Tony Peterson has a similar named book. It's eye opening on how most people have zero success bowhunting any type of deer

Edit: Book is called "Bowhunting public land whitetails." He talks about does too
