Who carries a pistol whilst in the woods for protection, specifically related to hunting and scouting

I also carry. Last year I put my waders on and crossed a creek on public land with just a small strip of public on the other side of the creek (and it was very deep almost didn't make it across without it coming over the top of my waders) and a big mountain on that side of the creek that was private land. I left my waders at the creek and put my rubber boots back on and easing along the creek and go about 100 yards and come upon a camp site with a tent and clothesline and jeans still hanging on the line, but I looked around and could tell it was not fresh because limbs had fallen on the tent and all. I hiked in .8 miles along that creek, and it was spooky coming back thru after dark. No way for someone to get there without crossing a big mountain or a deep creek and then to leave it all there was kind of weird.

The only time I've carried was in Alaska. Glock 10mm. Seems like a pretty common go-to bear gun up there.

No need in Maryland.

Actually, several years ago it was made legal to carry a handgun during archery, but it can't be used to legally take game.

I stand corrected. Now I gotta go read that thread about carrying with a saddle!

No language there on carrying during muzzleloader season?

Still cant carry during muzzle loader....and can only carry one muzzleloader(i.e. cant carry a .45cal BP pistol and a muzzleloader rifle)

Bummer there. Related but different is the reg of not carrying muzzleloader while archery hunting. That new antlerless muzzleloader weekend during archery bothers me, in that I'm sure one of these years I'm going to see a nice buck that weekend and cry as it walks off. Would like to have both weapons in the tree.

Yeah, I didnt even bother to hunt muzzleloader last year except late season cause I screwed up and forgot to put in for an antlerless permit.

Honestly, I feel the HC mini is almost as effective in the places I"m hunting...at the farm a little different because of range. BUT the ability to shoot either buck or doe sure is a bonus.

I hate the one buck rule. It will drive me nuts if I shoot a buck during archery and then CANT hunt during rifle....I mean, the rifle tag is part of your license...it should just be a "Buck tag" not a rifle buck tag...I almost feel like their stealing out money at that point. And you know based on numbers if you have a shot on a buck during Archery you're going ot take it...

I carry a big swinging right hook no need to compensate.
too funny...especially since my general carry when bow hunting(not in the spring scouting) is a Colt 1908 vest in .25acp...If I'm compensating, I have a serious problem... It is VERY LOUD though....

Haha close range that's plenty.

In all seriousness I made a decision when I was younger that being rather much a hothead when provoked and especially prone to the occasional road raging that I was way more likely to get myself into a pickle because I was carrying than in spite of it. I may have to reevaluate that at some point now that I am mellowing out in my 30's. I've had a couple weird people encounters in the woods but nothing I couldn't slither out of.

Zero fear of black bears and yotes and I've been followed, huffed at, and bluff charged. Those animals simply aren't dangerous to man sized humans imo.
