Cutting down LW sticks is a great option. But if you didn't drill any holes then that says to me that you kept the top two steps and chopped off the bottom. The versa button would then be right in the middle of your short stick, but it should really be 2/3's of the way up the stick like all the manufacturers do. Less chance of the stick kicking out with the versa button up higher. There's a reason they put the button up there...
I did this but removed the hardware and reinstalled "upside down". Before reinstalling the hardware the versa button was actually "below" the halway mark of the stick. Now it is atleast above the centerline if the stick. I've been climbing and they have been very solid so far.
Word to the wise, check your straps! I just happened to notice after a climb last night that one of my stick straps is cut and needs to be replaced IMMEDIATELY. Don't be an idiot like me.... check your straps!
