Who Wants Nothing To Do With One Sticking?

Ya im over one sticking. I find myself looking for perfect trees to avoid limb hopping while 1-sticking so I might as well use a LWHC or my Summit Titan. I use rappel rope as tether and gear/bow hoist to limit more ropes. When 1-sticking its a mess of dealing with rappel rope, second tether, and rope on climbing stick and stick aider all dangling everywhere. Its a pain moving tether up and unsafe due to how much slack I have to have to get it to move up. Its also very noisy when stick slides down and finally bites into tree. Completely unnatural squeak sound on oaks. Then using the top steps as platform to avoid dragging more rope/straps (ROS) or metal (platform) into the woods, makes the stick kick out or makes more noise while rotating around on top of stick.

I never saw a platform on a climbing stick when I decided to mount one on mine. I’ve never stopped using since that day. The stick/platform and one step aider fits in the pouch on my Turkey vest with my camera, camera arm and arm mount. Damn thing weighs maybe 3lbs. One sticking isn’t difficult and I’m a fat old man that’s not a fan of heights saying that. Then when it’s time to come down…..

Does anybody not use climbing spikes anymore? It’s always been my preferred method of climbing, then once at hunting height, rappel down….

I looked @ them when I 1st starting hunt in FL and a lot of trees were yellow pine and very sappy.. and I was hunting public.. so no go, Then I got older and and I've seen loggers use them in competition and thought how long are those guys knees gonna hold out.. Of course they were dropping 3-4' @ a whack! Now I hunt public in NY and some say you can and some you can't but for me I'm gonna not use them due to knee preservation, too many yrs playing racketball and tennis.. I love the idea as you can work around limbs like a cat

I'll start off by saying I only use the saddle set up in archery on public behind the house and surrounding areas. Private I use my fixed position stands or ground hunt. I'm not a ladder stand guy.
Well I bought all the stuff near end of last yr., started saddle hunting this yr w/the Sirkar 14" one stick, 2ea step aider, Schaefer cam cleat w/a tiny bungee between the cam teeth and that worked great. Since I'm LH the lineman loop is at attached to RH side. Because I use a MR device its deigned as a LH release & your RH strong arm holding the tail. Since I normally shoot off the RH side of the tree I tied stowing the rope on my pack as in the pics but you have a big loop and if I hang it off my right side in a pouch its just added weight on the saddle and some possible interference for the bow..... so I did a hack by rotating the MR 180 and while it worked fine the only issue is with clearance with a glove and you have to beeeee so careful that you don't let go of the lever and hear that SNAP.
So is the rotation of the MR dangerous?
How are you folks storing your repel rope??

I used LW climbing sticks for 20+ yrs on public so folks would not climb in my stands and liked them and as I got older I put a set of muddy 2 sided steps across the top of each so you did not have one knee up and one down when setting up fixed stands.. that was a huge improvement for me. Bottom line I done setting up stands, too much work and hassle, and yes I'll set 2ea for guests to come over but that's it..

Everyone has discussed the wt, speed etc on set up & tear down and I do like the one stick way better mainly for wt. and I find it as quiet if not more so. It very difficult to plan the exact $hit you need every time and I'm always over weight going in. Are ya gonna get cold is a big issue and I want a light set up. So when I was dragging my summit bow stand in with a full pack strapped in between for new spots it just got to be to much, too far to walk, sweating up etc. You all have been there. Saddles are the way to go just 3 sticks or 1 stick and so far the one stick seems for me the best. I just have to figure out a little smoother stick/tree release for max height gain with out straining.

As soon as I got the shirkar I did take a file and hit the teeth corners as they are super sharp and I never had problems with LW sticks slipping, ever and they are more rounded.

Packs, What is your favorite overall pack under 4lbs approx. 1800cu inch that you use exclusively for saddle hunting? I found this awesome little MPI outdoors pack for $15.00 @ flea market that is pretty good for me, but little small when you load up with clothes, gear and the shoulder straps bite as there is zero padding, but till I figure something better to hold the platform this will work. I may end designing my own or look closer @ the new trophy line saddle pack.
Hope you enjoy your season...

Well, I don't trust aiders, so nope. Unless somebody makes a 6 foot stick.

If you don’t like aiders then just use a full size, three step, stick. You don’t use the top step when one sticking (unless you’re suffering some mental deficiencies) so all you’d be doing with a 3 step stick is replacing the aider with a step attached to the stick.

With that being said, I too hated aiders and the entire thought of ever using one until I learned HOW to use one. Instead of using it like a ladder, and suffering through all the nonsense that goes with that, just stick your foot in it so the strap is in the arch of your foot and put the front of your foot firmly against the tree firmly. Doing that your foot will be solid and stay in place and you won’t have the waving around.

"Chopper070, This is my first year in a saddle too and have almost the same set up….Sh1kar, recon, and EWO squirrel steps for a ring of steps in addition to the monarch. Have you practiced much or hunted of your set up yet? The teeth on my Sh1kar make a lot of noise digging into the tree as I shift weight. They are like razor blades, and I’m wondering if filing them down might help."

Chopper070,
Yes I took a file to the teeth biters and to the front/back edge of both steps on the U cut outs. I use synthetic brown camo gloves with the rubber dots and go thru a few pairs a yr but I love them. When pulling up from the aider position I felt the sharp edges were too much on my hands. I don't hunt oaks as much as maple/blk walnut and I love the fact that it has a good grip. I have a ton of oak trees & I'll try and see what noise I get. I did install a small piece of bungee between the schaefer cam cleat with a square knot on the back with whipped ends so there are no loose tags and it stays secure. That stopped ALL noise. Some feel nervous about using them but I used to own an ole Melges M-20 hull # 76 w/ 176 sq.' of sail area and did jibes all the time using that same cleat in 15-20ish gusts. I feel the stresses are far greater than wrapping a rope around the tree and caming in w/a pull down to set ur stick. I'm using 8mm Teufelberger line in the cam and the bite is fine in my tests for a 205 lbs. Spec is 6mm-12mm.

I love my LW sticks to get up to pre setups on public which I have only 2 now, BUT I personally like the one stick method for general bowhunting.. I don't care what anyone says, when you use a lineman rope to climb and IF you fall your gonna get beat up on a slide to the 1st stick or down the tree and if you hit the ground I'll take a 14" stick over a 32" stick in my inseam!!! I also use a two step aider and it's a piece of cake toe to tree for me and I'm a average guy new saddle hunter.

Mark @ Treehopper did do a mod for me & my neighbors Recon's that I like when I ordered both saddles.. I did read a ton of what folks had written about the Recon/ESS and decided not to flip the plates but had the new buckle & strap sewn directly to the upper webbing circumference, had a loop strap sewn to the bottom panel w/ a quick release spring snap for the leg strap joint, and 2ea tethrd G hooks on the each end with loops sewn 1.5" below where the lower panels sewn seam meets & located on the outside for cinch up. I have zero issues with the saddle dropping down and I wanted zero interference between belt & bridge adjustments. Currently they feed thru the same slot. My bridge straps adjust so easy now. For me I am super happy with my mods. I did buy 2ea tethrd G hooks which was an add on @ my cost.. and 4ea rounded oval slides. The 2ea provided were both RH not LH/RH so I swapped them out. Mark was super accommodating with his customer service.. & can't say enough good about his product, craftsmanship and him personally. BTW EWO has the oval slides for.49ea and now carries the aluminum G-hooks for 1.99ea. That's a new item I noticed.

I have used the top step of my stick while 1-sticking. Helps to advance the tether as high as possible and out of the way for next move.

I use the top step when 1-sticking all the time. The higher I can put my tether on the tree, the better so that I can keep as much slack out of my tether as possible as I climb my aider and onto my stick. Guess I have mental deficiencies....

I don’t have any interest to try it. Any video I’ve ever seen if it looks like a pain in the a$$ and super slow.

To me it is neither. I have 4 novix mini with aiders that I tried to use again this Wednesday evening and I was so late coming out of the woods after having to remove all 4 and pack up that my buddy waiting at the boat started hollering for me he thought I was lost. One sticking all of that is packed and ready to rappel down the tree so when I get to the bottom of the tree all I have to pack is my rope.

I would like to see a comparison. Someone start at the base of the tree climbing one stick hunt 2 hours and climb down and stop the watch as they walk away from the tree and then do the same thing using multiple sticks and see which one is longer. Any takers. I dont have video equipment.

Up the tree for me might be a close wash but I know one sticking is less work. Getting out of the tree, I hunt right to legal light, set an alarm each hunt and follow it. Last night alarm went off I was out of the tree and packed up before I needed to turn on a light. It took me about 15 hunts/climbs but I like it more all the time.

I wish I could have experienced the “less work” 1-sticking
