Why don't yall 2TC?

I have an idea that I’ve been toying with for those of you who are 2TC climbing, specifically using an Amsteel foot tether.

I started playing with 2TC some this year with some stuff I had lying around. I already one-stick with my rappel rope so it’s no biggie to switch it up a bit to the foot tether. For my foot tether I’m using a 3/16” Amsteel daisy chain I had originally made for my mini-shikar before I put the cam cleat on it. It seems to be working great and I just clip into it with a webbing foot loop at the appropriate height.

I got to thinking though, I normally use an Amsteel gear strap. Why carry both. Once I’m at height, I just move up the foot tether, clip my pack to it on the hanging end, then add my bow holder and voila, one less thing to have to carry and one less thing to have to pull out and attach at height.

I’ve got a used set of the CGM 2TC with the Amsteel tether coming that I picked up to try out the foot loop and leg loop. I’ll have to modify the setup slightly since it’s not a daisy chain but I think it’ll work just fine. I’ll slide up the Amsteel friction hitch that attaches to the foot loop and clip my pack into that at height.
I think like minds think a like and as such others have also came up with this same idea but it’s buried under 120 pages somewhere. I don’t use an Amsteel Daisy chain but I do leave my foot tether on the tree and attach my pack at hunting height and then hang my bow on the other side. its simple and uses gear I’m already hauling up the tree like you mentioned. In the picture below my bow is on my top tether just be side of the tree branch. It would typically be on the bottom one as well.8F1F2278-316D-44B7-A94C-09481A3ACEF5.jpeg

So, I really like this footloop design - especially the second from the left which you can attach to yourself...
They are all like that.
I just move the prussic to where I need it... 'Inside' the girth hitch for climbing, 'outside' the girth hitch for passing limbs and hanging stuff from..

What's the advantage to making this out of one piece of rope, rather than tying a separate footloop to a footloop tether.
No real "advantage", just personal preference...

Is simpler better here?
Definitely!

That's basically what I do, except I am using heavier ropes. The foot tether becomes the backpack hanger when I get up the tree and on the ring of steps.

Do you find a major advantage to the heavier ropes for the foot tether? I’ve played around with the Amsteel daisy chain and it seems fine, moves easily.

No, not really. I made up several 2TC sets with Amsteel foot tethers and smaller diameter rope. They both come in under a pound. They are just as easy to climb on, but I have just gravitated toward the larger diameter rope for some reason.

So how much harder is 2tc on a big tree vs a smaller tree? Smallest tree I have here in my yard is about 18 inches in diameter and ii seems like the tree size might be making it difficult to move the tethers up— this is the only tree I have tried and can go up and down but for some reason it just seems like it takes a good bit of work to accomplish…

2TC become a little more tricky on 2ft diameter+ trees but still doable. You shouldn’t have any problem with 18in trees. Super small trees are the most difficult to me.

I'm only 5'7" so that makes big trees tougher to get my arms and leg around...

I've actually struggled on a tree or 3 for a couple moves and just gave up and climbed a different tree.

Yeah I’m thinking I need to try something smaller- I’m 5’8” but have short arms—I can barely reach around this tree and touch my fingers.
I feel like I have the moves down but find myself struggling to reach the tethers to move them up, more so on the bottom…
might need to try to shorten my upper tether some…
Thanks for the help

I have climbed some pretty husky trees and have had no problems other than the tethers getting a little short. I actually made a longer top tether just for this eventuality and carry it in my pack just in case. The one below was about the biggest I have tried so far, and it was no problem. I really try to stay away from trees that are too small since I like the tree to be about my torso width so I can hide behind it.

I haven't tried webbing like Jerry prefers (to Amsteel) for his foot tether. Anyone able to chime in on his/her experience of an all webbing tree strap for the footloop?

There's this discussion if that's what your after

You probably haven't heard "the climb of shame" on this thread?

BUT, I had to 2TC back up and get my rappel rope tonight...
I one-sticked up and was gonna 2TC down but I stuffed a good combination of rappel rope and figure eight in my pack that I haven't paired together in a while and I figured I'd give it a whirl.
Well, I forgot to hook up my retreaval line!

What I find so interesting about all the 2TC is all the different ways you guys have tweaked this to fit your climbing way.
How many climbs would you say it has taken you to get to that point?
25?50? No real feel for that honestly. It took about 5 climbs to get my moves down, after that I had an idea that there were numerous climbs to try different things. Not sure how many total climbs I've made or that my system is dialed, but it's the best I've used so far
