You kneaded jb I gotta see the package of what you're usingI just kneaded a bit of JB and pressed it in with my thumb. Then I used the end of a small triangle file to pack it to the depth I wanted and to smooth it out so It wouldn't want to hold bark( which it still does hold some anyway). I pressed in what I thought was about an inch deep. Right now I've only done two steps, if I continue I'll try less JB in the step. This go around I wanted to make sure I had enough in.
I put in about an inch. I used the steel stick.I really like this approach. Did you fill the entire stand-off or just enough to plug the hole? I'm guessing just enough but want to verify. Also what type of JB Weld are you using? Punched it into Amazon and came up with a whole range of options. Thanks
I didn't really. I got it as clean as I could with the small file I used but I didn't wipe it down with anything, another reason I put in so much. And probably ha e to make sure you're squeaky clean inside

My fear was that the compression of bark onto the JB weld as I cammed the step into position would push it down into the step where it would to rattle around and I wouldn't be able to get it out.Hold up! My jb weld didn’t hold up. Probably the stuff for aluminum isn’t the right kind. It seemed hard but not once tested.
I know some folks use some kind of expanding foam to lessen the metallic noise. I just wonder if the foam will compress and allow the step to core out the bark. I was looking for something I thought would hold up against the compression force.I'd think that the 2 part pourable expanding foam would work really well for this and would fill the entire tubing with minimal weight penalty.
Thank you sirJBWeld steel stik.

Kurt, there are different densities. Basic flotation foam is 2 lb. You can get 4 lb, 8lb or 16 lb. 4, 8 and 16 are structural type foams. Just a thought that went through my mind when I read the thread. Worst case, your steps would float if you dropped them while wading to your favorite river bottom stand!I know some folks use some kind of expanding foam to lessen the metallic noise. Yeah, figured what the hellI've been out on 4 hunts and I still think it's gonna work out. Haven't done more than the two steps yet. I'll also keep an eye on if the ones I did cam over more solidly. Did you do all your steps?
Like I said, I'm not seeing any draw backs as of yet.Yeah, figured what the hell
I used a 3/8" wood dowel rod measured to length and drove it in works great and no messy glue.I did this as well. I filled mine with foam and then the last inch is plastic steel.
