For those fellas that are already in the trees with their perch, do you find that the pressure of standing on the outside edge of the perch causes the step to pull away from the tree? Im having that problem with a homemade version, unless I put the platform in and then cam it over.

I don’t have a perch. I tried the plywood version a couple years ago and considered trying to build something like the perch. If you’re 200 lbs or less you shouldn’t have too many problems but when you get 250+ it’s going to have to be as tight as you can get it without bending the step. On a large tree with more rope to stretch it may not be possible to get it tight enough every time. I’m a wild edge step fan but have pretty much decided it’s a ring of steps on a strap for me. I’m intrigued by the perch but don’t see most people liking it. It’s hard to get people to stick with them long enough to get them cammed tight enough to feel solid when climbing without adding the leverage of a platform.

I have a home made one. I tried it at ground level. You have to really put some torque on the step to keep it solid against the tree while standing on the outside corners. It is possible without camming using the platform, but it took me a few tries on the ground. At height, it may be necessary to use the platform to cam as I likely wont be able to get the same force. I have not yet tried at height yet.

The last 2x I have used it I found that I have to retighten the Perch Stepp after I stand on it. I have a long tether and lower down and tighten up after I get everything else set up. After that it is good to go. Definitely use the Perch as leverage to get that Stepp tight AF. I weigh about 200 right now. OMW back to 165. Maybe the problem will go away lol.

After practicing with mine I was watching Drew from WE he suggested that you should put the platform on the step and use it to help cam it over while re -tightening it and it will work well .

That seems the best way to do it in general. Its a bit more fiddling but the perch should keep the stepp from bending too bad. And you have a little extra leverage.
