Wisconsin Packing out deer in 5 pieces

Most of us just drag it out. We can only leave the entrails so quartering in the field is basically worthless. They almost changed it a year or 2 ago due to CWD but it got reversed before the season.

To me that says you can take the legs off, and the head with the spine need to stay together??

No exact science. It depends on how heavy you want the parts. A lot of guys simply cut it in half and deal with it later. Its ways easier than dragging regardless. It is dumb rule.

I have been contemplating going in with a cordless sawzall and cutting it into thirds.

It can be done. It would make way more sense if they made it six pieces. 2 hinds. 2 front shoulders. Neck/ head. Spine/ribs. At least the basic breakdown of an animal is preserved. The 5 is non-sense. The guys the do five will do 2 hinds, 2 shoulders, and everything else.

What about leaving the two hinds together, and separate it from rest by cutting through spine just in front of the hips. Then two separate fronts. Separate the neck/head from the rib cage at the base of the neck, or separate the head from the neck at that joint just behind the ears (don't even need a saw to do that) and leave neck attached to rib cage. That ends up with five pieces. Even when I drag out deer and skin whole at home I leave the two hinds attached when I butcher and then debone everything off the hind legs and hips. Cutting through that hip/spine area to split the hinds is a lot of work with no benefit from my point of view.

I hate..hate ...HATE this law. It makes zero sense, Id bone out every deer if I could. What was there reason for reversing it?

The law is slightly better than before when the deer had to be taken out whole but still needs to be improved. If you register from the field it shouldn’t matter how many pieces you take out as long as it’s all removed except for entrails.

The rule change was going to require quartering and leaving the carcus in the field as a CWD control method. I think there was an uproar right before start of season that year by a lot of people that don’t know how to quarter a deer. Lots of people use processors in WI.

It would have been nice if they made that rule change optional instead of required. Both camps would have been happy then.

Not the most sensible. I called the local game warden before the season (the individual that would be writing a ticket if such a situation arose) and had a good discussion about what constitutes reasonable removal, number of parts that it had to be broken down into, and wanton waste. I’d suggest that others do the same. Also note, there is a bit of an unclear area there with regards to what can/can not be done before or after an animal is registered.

Guess I would just have to budget for fines. No way I am bringing a whole deer out the distances I normally hunt from the truck. Thankful we have an app so I can check it where it falls and can quarter and pack it out. 5 pieces is some of the dumbest crap I ever remember seeing in regs.
