I've been looking for a nice wool coat and pants for a couple of years that would work and be comfortable while in the saddle. Every thing I seem to find looked like it would fit like what I already have. So...I decided to put my thread injector to work on a set that would be more functional.

I started by making a paper pattern based off a coat I have that fits well.
I ordered some Italian military surplus 100% wool blankets and got to work. My pattern was a basic coat, so I added side zippers to accommodate the bridge and linemans loops. The coat is still a work in progress, still have to add a couple of design features. 1. Sleeve cuffs with 6" zipper. 2. Zipper pockets just below chest high for easier access. The pics show progress not the finished coat.

I thought about trying a similar project, but when I reminded myself of the almost impossible to remove smell on most of those surplus items, I held off. Did your blankets have any off smells? Where did you get them?

I agree... a lot of the surplus items do have a smell, but the blankets i got don,t have much of one. But they were dusty. I shook them out and gave them a good ironing and they were good to go. Oh... I got them from "Sportsmans Guide Outdoors".

I have an old 100% wool ARMY blanket. I am think about wearing it like a poncho. Cut it to fit, sew an opening for my head to go through and then rap a belt around the mid-section. Like RAMBO did in First Blood. LOL

Plus, if I camp dry it, it would be waterproof like a poncho. Of course, I would look like a homeless guy walking through the woods with a $1200 bow. :p

LOL! If you have a tread injector it wouldn't be hard to sew in side seams. It would be like a pull over vest. it would probably save you from being hassled by local law enforcement. LOL!

Could you work a hood into the design? Great idea.

Great project. Really like the idea. You guys are making my project list too long.
