I made a few over the years. The easiest one was an old 3/8" ratchet. I fitted the drill bit in a set screw socket, then drilled a hole and fitted a wooden handle in the ratchet handle end. Pop the socket off and it fits nicely in a pocket.

Well, I broke down and paid EZKut the $60 they wanted for their hand drill. Since it folds so small, and is so light. I'll carry the kreg bit and power drill before season, and hand drill in season.

Could you not just use lag bolt and a ratchet instead of bolts and a drill bit. Lags are pointed and would work like screw in steps. A 7 inch 3/8 lag grade A is less than a buck. In season use a ratchet out of season use an cordless impact. Anyone try this , I might.

That could definitely work, but I don't want to leave anything in the tree that would draw attention to the fact that the tree has been prepped. Also, I'm really cheap and I like that I paid $20 for 25 bolts ONCE and won't have to pay again in my lifetime, regardless of the number of trees I prep.

I like that idea.

I just keep the hand drill on me in season in case I need to clean up a hole. I did not enjoy doing a whole tree with one.
