For you guys that rappell down your tree....

If I get a little free time I will video some for ya. It's really easy and you don't need much gear at all. I have used my spikes all year for my mobile hunts and was really enjoying them. Now that I have started rappelling the last several hunts I love it even more. There's no faster way up or down a tree.

I look forward to checking it out. As I said, I've known for some time that spurs are the ultimate climbing tool but to just spring down the tree in a few seconds sounds wonderful

It really is wonderful.

Part of the reason I like to hunt out of a saddle is that it's more fun than a lock on stand. Rappelling down adds another layer of fun and excitement. I really do love it.

I actually look forward to the hunt ending so I can rappel down haha. I have been hooking into my rappel rig well before dark so it's all ready to go. All I have to do is lower my bow, pack my camera gear in my pack and slide down. I stop to take my platform off the tree and just hold it in one hand until I hit the ground.

You should just get extrabiner and put a small loop on the platform and clip it on you so you have your spare hand free on the way down. The only thing I haul up is my backpack which I use to weight my rope for my ascender. I have a biner that's worked into the webbing on the belt of my saddle and I clip the bow into it by the wrist strap. So when I get to height if I get surprised by a deer before I can pull everything up I've already got my bow to take the shot. That and my backpack adds weight that makes ascending more difficult. There's times when I'll end up just leaving it on the ground if I've not got much light left in the day.

I'm dying to try this when it comes out: Black Diamond ATC Pilot.

It is as near an "automatic locking" as a device can be without calling it one. He mentions in the vid that they call it "semi-automatic locking" in Europe. It looks like it pretty much locks when you load it.

The ATC Pilot display board behind him says that it "Accommodates ropes from 8.7-11mm". I wonder why he says 10.5mm is max?

Might be static rope.. It tends to be a little thicker than dynamic due to it's lack of deformation.. Or he's just dumb. :D

I checked several other sites about the 2017 gear and they all say 10.5mm. I was just hoping I'd be able to use the 11mm I just bought.

I'm looking at the Edelrid Jul2, similar to the Pilot, but accepts 11mm.

You might be able to use a 10.5 device with bandit because of how good of a hand the rope has. Just try it low and slow if it doesn't work sell it to me cheap. :)

I've been thinking about getting the Mega Jul for rock climbing. I love the built in asisted breaking. Plus if I'm going to have my wife or daughter catch for me and my 200+lbs assisted breaking would be nice. For now I just have to rope solo my way back up the route to get my biners back when we're done. I guess I get more climbing in that way.

Ive read some of the messages in here...maybe not all...but why dont you guys just get a petzl gri gri? Just wondering why a lot of you are looking at the rapel devices instead of the gri gri? What am I missing? The gri gri doesnt have a lock per se....like the petzle rig (I have the rig and the gri gri) but prefer the gri gri. I just tie off the working end of the rope to ensure the gri gri doesnt slip...simple and quick to do. But honestly with a 10.2mm rope..it has never once not braked even after slack is put in the line.

I climb with the gri gri...so i put it on at ground level and stays on the whole hunt till im back down on the ground.

What is the advantage of using the repel devices like a figure 8 or black Diamond ATC over a gri gri?

For me, it's because the Gri Gri is $100 vs $30 for the Edelrid, more complicated to insert rope, and twice the weight. I'm sure the Gri Gri is a great device, just doesn't meet my selection criteria.
