How I use the Wild Edge Stepps

Yea that's what I do. And you have to keep in mind that all of your next steps are not going to work out to the right height without adjusting them as well.

Okay sounds good, just wanted to see if there was another solution. Even with the linesmans belt its not a big deal. Thanks again for showing this method brother!

You could use an adjustable bridge and that would give you a little more flexibility. Still clip in front like Cain does instead of around the tree.

I don't know if an adjustable bridge would help stop the low step from uncamming? Is there a quick way to attach the bridge to the tree?

No, I didn’t mean that. My experience is you have to set the stepp where you can and a knot or odd shape of the tree changes where you can set the stepp. I read the post as having 2 questions. The other question was if you have to set your step not at waiste level, do you have to use a linesman’s belt to secure to the tree rather than to the stepp like Cain does in his video. I was saying that if the stepp is maybe a foot higher or lower than you wanted and you had an adjustable bridge you could just adjust that and clip on with a carabiner and keep tight to the tree while you set the next step. I’ve done this before and it works. The step shouldn’t uncam once it’s set well.

Awesome man, I'm following you now. Thanks for the advice, I'm gonna head outside and give that a shot.

Cheers!

I got a chance to try your climbing method with my Stepps. It works great and is much simpler than how I was doing it bef
Hi Cain,
I wanted to thank you for your post. I had a chance to try your method combined with the "simplified wild edge knot" http://saddlehunter.com/community/index.php?threads/simplified-wild-edge-knot.5554/ and it was so much easier and faster than the way I had been climbing using the Stepps. Thanks for the information.

Your welcome. All season I have used the steps to climb and 3 steps for a platform. I like the climbing method, but I don't like the time and difficulty in setting them as a platform. I just bought some ameristeps to use as a platform. I think I will like this better.

What riggers belt are any of you using? I see several options on Amazon not priced bad. I just want to be sure I buy one that is user friendly and most of all, quiet.

BLACKHAWK CQB riggers belt. I like the extra strap that secured the attachment point out of the way when I am not using it.

Maybe it was mentioned earlier in the thread, but what about using a small rock climbing sling hitched around the horizontal bar of the WE step instead of hooking the biner directly to the bar. @redsquirrel does this on the strap of his Silent Approach steps to connect his adjustable aider while climbing. I think it would eliminate the risk of the biner sliding to one side and also eliminate noise. Just a thought I had after seeing how Red used them on his straps at Saddlepalooza. The only issue I see is it may position your body back a little farther.

I had planned to wrap the cross bar with camo form or stealth strip it. Got a few things to try out once I get them that I been thinking of.
Anyone know the shipping time?

It has been posted SOMEWHERE on this site lol. Where I don't remember. That may be where I got the idea to do it from. When I first started with the stepps I was very hesitant to connect anything to them. I'm considering changing that because I have learned over this season that even if a stepp comes loose on me, it is not coming completely loose or moving, its just shifting.

Not my climbing system - but you guys could use a foot long amsteel loop and girth hitch it to the support bar then just clip in and out of that loop. Matter of fact, you could use the smallest amsteel and jut leave the girth hitched loops on each step to make it easy to climb and descend

Don't forget to shove an ear plug in each hole of the stepp

I filled mine with spray foam and sprayed them with Plastidip. It has helped a little with the hollow sound and the plastidip works great for traction. I haven't had the chance to use them in the field yet but looking forward to it!

When I first started climbing with the steps, I would uncam one at waist level about 6 ft off the ground and hang from it just to see what it would do. I was never afraid that it would come off the tree. However I am curious as to how it will react from a 3 ft fall. I don't think the rope will fail, but I am wondering about the step itself. This season I am planning on testing the step with a 175lb dummy to see just what will happen with a 3' fall. That's all the slack I will ever have in my rope. I will post a video and results here for those that are interested.

I'm sure the stepps are solid and will take way more than my weight but I modified my "Cain's" version of climbing just slightly to remove reliance on the single bar in case of a fall while advancing. Instead of tethering directly to the bar for the advance step I am girth hitching the tether around the tree and then moving that hitch above and draping it over the just tied step before advancing. This secures me directly to the tree and not just the single bar on the step while I am actively moving up the tree. I am still using a belt carabiner to attach me to the waist height step in lieu of the lineman's belt while installing the next step. I feel safe with that because there is no slack available to develop any fall distance.
