Kayak Help.....

I came across this flat transom, 11 foot canoe. If I am able to drop the coin on a canoe anytime soon, it is probably what I will get.

I LOVE the Nucanoe, but the dang thing is heavy. I plan on putting a topper on the truck, with drawers in the bed, so I would need to be able to lift whatever I end up with to head height. I won’t ever be able to put a Nucanoe on top of a vehicle by myself.
The flat transom is for a motor of some sort.

For those of you that might have the coin to spare on a motor... you might look at the Torqeedo system. Pricy, but sweet as heck

EDIT:
I would seriously consider a Frontier if I found a decent deal on a jet ski trailer to convert...

youtube is your friend.. there is a video of a one handed method for rooftopping even the hobie pro angler.. it requires a Yakima sweet roll, a Malone krack. and a piece of string and mat.. you tie the string to your hitch or bumper, and then to the back of the kayak. this prevents the kayak from sliding away from the vehicle. walk to the front of the kayak and lift with one hand and place it on the K rack. walk to the back of the kayak and lift and slide with one hand up onto the roof racks... untie the string and strap pdown the kayak... I have personally witnessed this method May of 2017 and I now own the setup for my newest vehicle and plan to sell my Harbor Freight 4x8 trailer.

I found a used frontier 12 last year for $900. I used it all summer to take my boy fishing. I loved that no matter how much he wiggled, he couldn't tip us over. I wanted to use it for hunting but didn't quite get to it. I put a 50# thrust trolling motor on it and we went wherever we wanted to go. I thought about buying a 2.5hp outboard for it. I looked at the propane ones to eliminate gas fumes but they are crazy expensive.

look into Kayakbuddys dot com they make a motor... I am in process of adding it to my Hobie Outback.. but I bought my motor cheaper elsewhere and am gonna add there lower outboard unit...

I have been looking at kayaks and canoes as well for additional mobility. It just doesn't seem that there is enough room on a kayak for when you kill a deer. What would be the advantage of a kayak over a canoe?

Smaller, lighter easier to access small creeks ....but come with a price of finding a way to get your animal out.
I have a 9 footer, weighs 37lbs, and max load is 325lbs. And fits in my van easily so I can secure it if I choose land access.
I wouldn't call it an advantage over a canoe or new canoe, it is just what I have so I deal with it.

I just depends on your needs. I have a big kayak. It holds 600 lbs. But it's heavy and bulky. It much different than a large canoe actually.

But the main purpose of my kayak is fishing. It just so happens to work well for hunting.

If you get creative you can make the smaller kayaks work.

Also, there are a lot of kayaks out there that leave plenty of room for a deer plus gear.

dt.jpg Look past the silly dude and you will see a deer and gear easily handed in my Nucanoe.

Hey Dave, is that a Frontier 12? I noticed the picture of the one earlier in the thread and since you mentioned it, I starting doing some research on it. It looks like a hybrid between a canoe and a kayak.

Yes frontier 12.... it is definitely a compromise that for me addresses and overcomes the weaknesses of both

I think the nucanoe is tough to beat if you need a jack of all trades. They're spendy if all you need is water access. If you're not doing anything other than moving from point a to point b in a hunting scenario, I'd go with a cheap canoe that people have used for decades.

If you need your boat to be multifunctional, for different styles of hunting and fishing, I'd go with a Nucanoe.

If you will fish a lot, I'd go with a Hobie.

I really like the NuCanoe but I do very little fishing so it basically would just be for hunting. So the question is, do I search for what I need or what I want... Time to start relentlessly searching craigslist.

Hunters have been using canoes quite successfully for decades. But there's no doubt the Nucanoe is an upgrade. Then it's just a matter of how much you want to spend.

Heck, some of the canoes cost as much as the Nucanoes nowadays.

And canoes are noisy, unstable when getting in and out unless you beach then, and very limited and how you can modify them for different activities
