Knaider/Swaider tutorial

Yep. I've practiced a lot, and it gets tight with the bands. But, two thoughts: the bands stretch (wear) when under a lot of continued force, and my loops were sewn large enough that, when under pressure, the bands were being stretched wider than they should have. That led me to think that I should just put some more stitches in the loop to make the opening smaller, but with the slides, I don't see a need to do that.

I tried using zip-ties and they just stretched out and became loose.

For what it's worth, JoAnn has slides. The sticker price is higher than strapworks, but they end up being cheaper without the shipping costs.

If going thru JoAnn, check for coupons. They almost always have some. You can pretty consistently get 40-60% off a single item there.

One way to eliminate the multi direction stress on the stitching is to make your loop larger and add a 3 bar adjuster. This should significantly reduce the stress on the stitches and ensure the stress that is there is on a single plane. It also allows me to cinch the loop to my foot.

There is a video series on sewing webbing in this thread. A box x should be plenty strong in this application since these should not be receiving a shock load.

Yes. That will definitely help reduce the separation force on the stitch. Nice work!

Well, I broke down and built my knaider/swaider yesterday. I have a couple of kinks to work out of it, but I am thoroughly impressed so far. I opted for the least amount of stitching possible and made both the knaider and swaider adjustable. The only mod I may make is to change the 1/2 webbing out on the back of the knaider and use some elstic. I am not sure how much of a benefit that would be, but I do perceive I would like it.

For the calf strap on mine I used a leg strap off of a hatchet sheath that I had laying around. That leg strap has a 3” length of elastic sewn into the webbing off of one of the buckles. I really like it over the straight piece of webbing I used to mock it up and try it out. Gives a little squeeze on the leg without constricting. I think it’s really going to help as the clothes get added throughout the season as well.

It really needs to be tight around the foot to stay in place, otherwise it is prone to falling off. That's why a slide is nice because you can cinch it up tight to your foot. Plus it makes it easier when putting the loop on.
The cinch tube made of a 5" piece of tubular webbing works great for this. Easy to adjust and holds tight to foot. Worth considering.

Any CANADIANS know where to find the 1 inch double j hook used on the insider?
So far, I can only find them on a set of ratchet straps for 27$

Princess auto has a ratchet set on sale for 9$ with a 1” hook. That’s what I bought.

@Peterk1234 and @swampsnyper you guys are ridiculously awesome. This system has been the first time I’ve actually enjoyed using the stepps. I liked Cain’s method except I needed 6 stepps. 3 stepps plus my platform now. Crazy! Thank you!

Thanks but that’s all Peters brain work. I just took @DaveT1963 single aider and put a foot cinch on it, then Peter took it off to a rocket science level.

I was rocking this system yesterday and was getting 20+ft with 4 W.E. steps using my Treesqueeze. A little more practice and I think it will be very efficient.
I'm also planning on using my "poor man's tree squeeze" with this but I can't climb for a while yet, how did it go?

I think it will slow me down a little but I'm ok with that if its safer.

I have been having some issues with the the foot coming out on the knaider/Swaider. I think that I figured out a way to prevent this. I sewed another strap that goes behind my foot and secures the foot. I am unable to test this today but will try it tomorrow afternoon.

I attached a picture. I am not certain I need it to wrap entirely around my leg or not.

I actually had to place the strap in the front instead of behind my Achilles to keep it secure. (This was for the Swaider).

I am also going to incorporate a tree squeeze with this as I had the lineman's belt slip. My natural reaction was to push my body away from the tree so I never slipped down. I think this was because I was already leaning out and gravity pulled me further away from the tree. I don't think I had more space than normal in the lineman's belt. If the tree squeeze idea I have doesn't work, I will just be using the knaider like others on here.

Ok

I'd really like to see someone demonstrate this while hanging steps. Also curious how easy it is to set up a tether between steps to get around branches when not standing with two feet on a step.

Hi @Peterk1234 ...I was wondering if those webbing adjusters are weight rated? What are your thoughts on them possibly breaking? Thanks

I have no idea. I can only share my experiences, which includes a lot of climbs on them all Spring and Summer. I'm easily over 150 climbs as of today and no signs of it wanting to break yet. One of the crossbars does get bent as it settles in when in use, but it never budged after that. I posted a picture. I will eventually stitch it, once I know I am not adjusting it. I want to be sure of the lengths and test through an entire hunting season.

My sewing is holding up very well, which, by the way, are some of the ugliest stitches I have ever seen. I am so jealous of the knaiders people are posting here. Wish I could sew like others.

The webbing itself is also holding up well. Really no wear from my boots. I even walk around with them on for short distances. I take them off when at hunting height though, and just clip them to my harness. I posted a pic of that as well. It looks like a tangled mess, but it's not. They are very handy just hanging there.
