Live from the tree 2017 version

Thanks guys. Back in the woods after a buck this morning but no deer yet. It is foggy and humid. Yuck.

How are you not covered sweat?

Covered is an understatement. It was miserable. I don't think I'll be hunting mobile anymore until it cools off.

You guys hunting in this heat is dedication ! Bummer on your deal, G2.

It happens. The tough part for me is due to my profession, I'm always learning a new area. That's fun, but it makes locating and targeting mature bucks more difficult.

I was thinking about this on the tree last night. I haven't hunted the same part of the country for more than 2 seasons in a row in the last decade. In the last 10 years I've lived in FL, GA, CO, NY, Iraq, and Afghanistan. As soon as I figure out the land, and locate a few bucks, it's time to move again!!!! VERY FRUSTRATING!!!

I think that's maybe why I was especially bummed last night. I've put a TON of work into learning these GA swamp bucks. To get one at 35 yards and miss out because of not being prepared was really frustrating. It would be one thing if the circumstances were out of my control. But that buck gave me a broadside shot well within range and I screwed up. It was 100% my fault. I think that's why I got so angry.

You career is awesome though, and proud of you! Maybe it was meant for a , better , bigger one.

Did not make it out this morning headed out now for an afternoon hunt. The heat is killing me this opener weekend and has slowed my spots down until well after dark. 3 days and over 30hrs in a tree with nothing yet!!! Its a bummer but I can't stop! Thats what I keep telling myself lol anyways to all good luck and stay safe.

Well it was still hot tonight and I had one doe come by not within range but she did seem to mind that about two hours earlier i got this guy!!

I have had some issues with these guys as of late. Two of them came in tonight around 3:15 or so. Now some of you are probably noticing that there are 2 arrows in the picture but there is a third one also behind me!! I hit him with the arrow pictured on the right right behind his shoulder at 18yds. He dropped and began to thrash. He never yelped or made a sound. I watched for about a minute and he was still thrashing so i put a second arrow which is not pictured in him literally in the same spot. He continued to thrash for another minute. So I have too much respect for a animal which I despise as much so i nocked a third arrow which went through his lower stomach. He died after that. It was really brutal and I felt that I had to finish him off as quickly as possible. So I am still left with mixed emotions regarding this kill and post. I am telling myself that this animal even though kills without mercy I showed it respect and trying to finish it off. I also feel that since its a residential area that the chickens, dogs, and people will be a little safer now even though its just one!!

Great job on getting the yote. There is too many of them around. It's in our nature to do things right. It doesn't always work as planned but once you start the job you're committed to finishing it. Good work.

I let them be. I don't eat coyote. It always amazes me when I see one while I'm in the tree. I expect them to smell me but I haven't had one bust me yet... deer yes but not a coyote. I like how they are always hunting...they are always looking for mice.

Well said...

There was a time when I was skeptical about coyotes and their impact on the deer population. Until my buddies and I started paying to lease 500 acres in a county near my home. In the first 4 seasons we saw a steady decline in fawns and an increase in coyotes. We held out hope and maybe even a bit of denial about what was happening until the hunt/deer sighting ratio was way lopsided. Decided it was time to fix it or quit leasing it. Started shooting them and haven't stopped. I'm sure there is plenty of judgement surrounding the "kill them all" stance but since doing so that property has gotten increasingly better each year.

Mice, and fawns....

They have done studies showing that over 65% of all fawns born are killed by cyotes in their first 6 weeks of life...

Coyotes take about 21 hours to kill a full grown deer from the beginning of attack until the deer expires... they eat them alive...

Yes nature is brutal. This was not the biggest one on my property but nonetheless they have multiplied and are now started to disturb the deer. The deer up and disappear more frequently this time of year with the yotes that move in. I dont mind sitting all day but when you start seeing more yotes then deer its a problem.

I saw a set of game camera pictures where a bunch of coyoted take down a nice buck at a feeder. It was brutal and took forever, but you're right, they basically ate him alive

I think I saw the same one, I believe it was from Texas. A really nice mature buck too!

They said when they moved into Georgia that they only ate small mammals. When everyone started noticing deer hair in scat they claimed it was road kill and deer lost by hunters. Now they are finally admitting they were wrong.
I hunted tonight with nothing sighted. 91 degrees when I left the truck. Got turned around and didn't get out of the woods until about 9:00. We will just call it scouting in the dark.

LOL @EricS

@MCDM Maybe I'm the odd man out, but I always feel a little bad anytime I kill an animal. Maybe "bad" is the wrong word. I don't feel like I did anything wrong, but I feel empathy for the animal. I understand humans are predators and it's the way of life, but every time I take the life of another living creature, it always impacts me.

@g2outdoors you are right!! I did feel bad in this experience but not because i chose to shoot because they really just need to be kept in check but because I personally have never seen an animal put up such a fight to live. I mean this yote was as big as my dog about 40-50lbs and it was fighting. When i shoot a deer they run off and die. So I guess it was just the sight of it all. I mean nature has a balance and when there are too many predators well the deer and other critters stand no chance. I always say to people that the animals in nature fight for survival everyday, they battle all the elements when we run to our homes with heat and A/C. They have to fight for every meal when we can just go to a store. All of them deserve a level of respect. Predators must be kept in check and populations in some sort of control. This was a very life changing experience for me and something I will always remember.
