PigMageddon 2017

ok. I am trying to work some deals here on airline and baggage. I signed up for a delta credit card to get my first checked bag for free. Then the second should be around $35. If i can get most of my gear into carry on, then I should be able to bring back close to 100 lbs of meat if needed.

perfect time to work on that ultralight saddle.....

I am looking at flying in Thursday afternoon and leaving monday. Does that work for you red/G2?

Do we have a place to lock stuff up while in camp? I would usually use my car, but since i am flying in, I won't have a car.

I haven't booked my flight yet, but I have permission from the missus, and I am gettting more excited daily.
Ernie, that schedule would be pretty similar to what I would do except I probably won't get in until later in the evening on Thursday.
Here is my timeline for finalizing if I'm coming or not:
1. Get the final approval from the wife next week after xmas stress (we're hosting).
2. Work out details of coverage for watching the baby
3. Request time off of work after Jan. 1
4. Book flights asap.
That's where I stand. I'm really hoping I can make this happen. I've been wanting to go hog hunting for a long time, and to do a saddle g2g at the same time would make it extra sweet.

Do we have a roll call yet?
Like my name "ImThere"!!!!! Woohoo

I am new to saddle hunter and will try to at least stop by and hunt a day. It really depends what happens between now and then. I would definitely like to meet some of the guys on this forum and check out some of your setups. February will be a great time to hunt. Food sources will be scarce. The hogs will be calmed down from deer season. It should make for good hunting If I found some really hot sign around a food source I might hunt from a tree. I'm sure more hogs will be killed from the ground than the trees.

That's good insight. I feel the same way. It depends on what mother nature provides by way of weather as well.

I haven't hunted Stewart. It's close enough too me that I really need to spend some time over there getting to know the place. I have hunted enough places in South Georgia with similar terrain to know by the time February gets here there are no acorns , peanuts, soft mast or crops left. Most food plots will be either picked almost clean or nearly mature rye or oats that don't really draw much wildlife. The hogs will be scattered but will be grouped up in small pockets. They will be eating mostly subterranean insects and roots. The sign will be very visible. For those worried about going hunting for a few days on a place they have never stepped foot on it shouldn't be a problem as long as the group communicates. Finding them is harder than getting on them once you figure out where they are. Riding the roads looking for tracks can be a good way to get an idea of which block of woods you want to hunt.

And for those of you who haven't hunted pigs yet, they aren't the stealthiest creatures. Large groups often vocalize constantly in thick brush.

Turn your volume up to hear them vocalize

Also, if you end up downwind of their bedding area (or the sounder) your nose will tell you as well.

IkemanTX is right. They aren't "Grey ghosts" like whitetail. The trickiest part is finding them. Once you do, they're fairly easily hunted...as long as you're downwind. Their noses don't play around.

Trying to get my son to go with me, he has a guidos web and just learning it. After holidays, im going to put in vacation so i can attend. Looking forward to meeting yall and learning more on the saddle stuff.

And I always run into them when I am scouting without a bow...

Came across pigs on 45% of my trips into the field this year, scouting and hunting included. They typically weren't at the 10 yards like in the video above, but at least close enough to hear vocalizations.

One of these days I will get a longbow to throw over my shoulder on scouting trips.

Seems like it would be wise to just boogie through the woods covering as much ground as possible. Once you locate sign or bump some, then your in the game. Walking around sneaking seems like it wouldn't be productive.

Could coordinate a scouting drive then set up an L shaped ambush. Light them up and then push through clearing anything left. Everybody good with sectors of fire and muzzle awareness?

If there is room I would like to come too. Would be great meeting you guys.

I'm starting my new job in Chicago on Jan 3rd, so can't commit 100% quite yet, but will do everything I can to make it happen!
