Guys,

There are some aluminum tree steps for sale on Ebay.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/8-Treesteps-Aluminum-Folding-Tree-Stand-Steps-/291865165104

Do you think these would work for a platform if I put 4 of these on a ratchet strap? They look like they are made for connecting to bolts, but it may work. Just want to know if anyone has tried this approach and if it worked well. Im a little nervous about going with the old plastic ones by Ameristep since there are some bad ones out there and they are over priced. I've thought of building a platform but that option will not let me walk around the tree 360 degrees. I could see the platform working in some situations if you know exactly where the deer are coming from but if they are going to come from different directions it would be nice to always stay on the backside of the tree form where the deer are coming. Any help would be appreciated!

I don't think they will work well, they are made for hanging on a bolt like you said.

As for the ameristeps, I wouldn't worry about their safety as long as you verify you don't get recalled ones, which is pretty easy, there is a thread on here about that: http://saddlehunter.com/community/index.php?threads/ameristep-strap-on-step-recall-information.888/ I have used them and on a boat buckle or ratchet strap, they are rock solid There price on the otherhand is another issue.

Another option is a DIY step which I made over last winter: http://saddlehunter.com/community/index.php?threads/diy-strap-on-steps.1084/
I made three and tried them out for a few hunts at the end of the season and I liked them alot. I got busy this year and forgot to make a couple more to complete my set otherwise I'd be using them this season.
You can now buy single hawk sticks also: http://hawkhunting.myshopify.com/collections/climbing-sticks/products/helium-1pk-climbing-stick

Red,

Thanks for the reply. The link for the DIY step links to the strap on recall thread. Can you give me the correct link? Thanks again for the help. Im just trying to finalize my setup. Thanks!

Charles

I tried to make these work on a strap last year. I had a hard time keeping them from rotating under side load. The ameristep had a 2" wide base to help with that rotation. These folding aluminum steps are only 1" I think. I will try and find the thread where I posted pictures. The only way I got them to work was to put a 2" backer on them which basically defeated the purpose of trying to go smaller than the ameristep.

Check out the diy forum, we have tried a lot of ideas. Lol

I have four strap on ameristeps on an OCB buckle strap if anyone is interested. I don't think I will be using them this year lol. Shoot me a pm if interested

Price?

I used Cranford rope steps on a ratchet strap before I found my ameristeps. The way I had them mounted they worked fine. There's a photo on here somewhere if you search under my name.

The disadvantage was that they can bang together, weigh a bit more and slightly more fussy when initially lining them up on the tree.

I have cranford rope steps in the diy that i had milled to work with a strap and not bend. They are a good alternative to the ameristeps

To anyone doing this, I would just advise that you be careful. I've seen photos of that top portion bending after doing this.
The bending I have seen was when the strap was run BEHIND the top part and the weight was on the rings. Are you sure that isn't what you saw?

Yea, maybe that was it. I can't remember exactly anymore.
