We are creeping up the standings gents. Still a ton of season left to get it all sorted but good luck to you all this week. I may get out for another post-work hunt Wednesday or Thursday not sure yet. If I do it'll be another if it's brown it's down hunt, as muzzleloader season will be open then so I can shoot another buck, and would still have a bonus buck tag for late archery. (These rules have never contributed to multiple bucks in the past for me but here's to hoping lol) this weekend I have my kids again so no all day hunting on a weekend until the 28th.

I heard that.....every time I gotta go outta town I seen more critters in a couple days than I see in all my hunting days combined. I think i was in maryland or Delaware somewhere one morning and in those fields along the road there was herds of 50+ deer. Big giant 1s. Same when I went to New Jersey...I walked some trails and the deer sign was crazy and good areas so easy to find

ground up 32 lbs of sausage/burger/future smokies tonight and it took quite a while. Didn't weigh the roasts/steaks/jerky meat that's already vac packed and in the freezer yet but sheesh this buck is like twice the size of the doe I shot last year.

Also now that I'm pretty much done processing him it's definitely time to shoot another. Hopefully.

I saved the hide and keep telling myself in going to tan one some days but I said the same about a doe hide from last year and ended up throwing it away for freezer space. We'll see. Anyone ever self tanned a hide before? I have a bottle of the hunter and trapper's hide tanning formula, need to figure out how to flesh it. I have an older woodworking drawknife that would likely work, but no fleshing board. Seems relatively easy to make one out of a 2x6 or a piece of PVC pipe...

But I may spend my time trying to shoot another deer instead.

I know it's still too early and I shouldn't be doing it but I've been looking at wind predictions thinking about how to attack it this weekend. The hunt is sat, sun, mon and as of right now Monday is showing that the wind would be right to go back into the area I found all the buck sign. The other 2 days are doable but I don't think I want to risk it. But as far as I know somebody could have been in there this previous weekend on the 2nd archery hunt....don't know till I go look at the walk in road and see if there any boot tracks. The walk in road was flooded above normal rubber boot height when I was there and we had some pretty heavy rain since then so chances are pretty good nobody went in there.

Because this place so long and narrow I tend to stay down toward the check station in the mornings....most other hunters bomb the road trying to get up to the northern sections trying to beat everybody else to their spots. This place has a check station and u have to talk with a real live person and they issue u a permit that u carry with u and turn back in at the end of the night. Check station opens at 5 and they'll (me included) be lined up like a rally race is about to begin....it's actually pretty funny to watch. They get the permit and jump in and take off and once they get outta sight they rev the motor and haul butt. There's only 1 road up and down this thing and u can only go as fast as person in front of u and these jokers get right on each other's bumpers....gal dern traffic jam at 5:15am in the middle of the hunting woods. Hahahaha. I don't want any part of that...my little truck is right at the correct height to were the blinding headlights of these brand new trucks makes it unbearable. I just pull over and let them by. I almost wrecked my truck last year cause I was blinded by some d-bag...I looking for a pull off so I can get out of his way but he's right on my butt. I see something that looks like flat ground and whipped in there and the passenger front went into a ditch and driver rear come off the ground. Luckily I had a guest with me that day and we got it unstuck...public land is such a treat sometimes

put fresh batteries in my cell cam that I have near that spot and looks like the deer moved thru around 10 pm. No bucks and that's all we can shoot for the first 10 days anyway. Was set up on the spot I killed my 8 point last year (I killed him on the 19th and the white oaks were dropping) but didn't hear any drop. I got to get out and scout and find the feed tree that is dropping now.

That’s cuz up here no one will let you hunt their property yet bitch about the deer eating up their landscaping and roadkill smashing up their cars. Go figure.

I was off work yesterday watching my daughter and took her to scout with me. We scouted one of my old haunts and found some good sign, including very active feed trees and scrapes. I haven't been up in there in 8 or 9 years... It's exactly like I remember and it's in NJ, so I have a buck tag there, and I'll probably buy my additional tag too. The spot is essentially a 300yd travel corridor between two swamps. It's about 2/3 up a mountain with a steep ridge on one side, a small rock "razor" ridge crest on the other, and a swamp at either end. The only negative is you have to pick shooting zones because it's pretty thick and they'll usually be on the side where you're not set up lol. I'm gonna try to get a buddy to help me cover it and go in Saturday afternoon.

If you can't get a buddy to go with you bring some sweaty clothes and hang em on the side that you can't reach? I've heard of people doing that to "push" deer towards a corridor you want them to go through. Not sure if it actually works in real life or if it's just a silly thing people say online though.

I'm not saying that might not work, but my viewpoint is that it's also a good way to burn a spot if you're hunting it more than once! This is a small and high activity spot, so I usually just roll the dice... I've previously harvested a few does and a buck from this spot, and was in the "wrong" spot once by 50yds. and watched a hammer walk a different trail than what I was on. Hoping this weekend brings good weather for activity, because this is a good food source right now, but it's also a great spot for rut/pre-rut activity!

After a few days in the ICU I was able to get to a regular room and was just told today I should be able to leave the hospital tomorrow so my wife kid and I can continue our trip home. I have had an infection in my heart and lungs which lead to pneumonia. Not going to be 100% for a while I think, not even sure I could draw my bow right now but that might change over the next few days as I get back on my feet.

Glad to hear you're doing well enough to be sent out of the ICU and hopefully discharged soon! Hoping the recovery continues quickly.
