It’s a great turkey spot!! Too bad this will probably be the last year I hunt it. It got sold just before he season and the closing is tomorrow! Going to ask new owner for permission... *crossing my fingers*

I feel your pain, in 2016 I lost the family farm I hunted for years to a major farming corporation. I tried to contact them through email with no response. Maybe the current landowner can put in a good word for you. Good luck!

Another beautiful Michigan bird bites the dust! Had a short hunt calling for my brother in law this morning and brought this tom in on a string. We were in our blind at 6am and just after we were setup the toms started gobbling like crazy for the next half hour. At 6:30 we spotted a ton 50 yards out strutting toward our setup. He got within 15 yards and my BIL dropped him. We were done hunting at 6:45am - less than an hour after we got out!

<snip>

Congrats. My MI hunt this year resulted in turkey tag soup! After filling my tag first day out the last 2 years I got skunked after 3 days hunting one of the MI SGAs. Ran into a couple walking their dog on Sunday, they were going same direction on trail as me. When they got 50 yards ahead I hit the box call and got the first gobble of the day! The guy dogwalker turns and yells, "HEY DID YA HEAR THAT?" No more gobbles after that. :(

I was an idiot this morning and messed up my chance to kill my second bird. I've hunted my butt off this past week and it's been tough! Finally this morning I got setup right and had three jakes and a big gobbler coming right to me. There was a drainage in front of me and the jakes worked their way down towards the bottom below me. The gobbler was strutting his way toward me and for sure saw my decoys. I thought he was going to stay on the logging road and come right to me but instead he started acting spooked and went down the drainage with the jakes. he stepped out in the open and I let one fly. It was just too far with the 20ga and he took off flying. I'm gonna give him a few days and go back again. My time is running out and fishing season is about to heat up so my second tag might go unfilled this year.

Well my first turkey season is coming to an end this weekend. I'm 100% sure that I did more wrong than right. I called in one hen, and only heard one bird gobble the whole season. Never saw the gobbler. Not sure if he had hens with him that pulled him away or if I did something wrong when I tried calling to him. Hopefully I'll be able to find a babysitter and give it one last shot this weekend. Well regardless as frustrating as it could be I still had a blast and I'm already looking forward to next year's turkey season. I'm just hoping I can make a hunt with somebody who knows what the hell they're doing so maybe I can learn something. I think the hardest part is not knowing whether you're screwing up or not. Congrats to all the guys who had a great season, and for those who's season is just starting, the best of luck to you!

I think part of my problem is possibly not having a whole lot of Tom's on the property I'm hunting. The other part is definitely my inexperience. The most frustrating part I would have to say is not being able to locate a single bird before a hunt. People make it look so easy on hunting shows, it's really not, at least it wasn't for me.

Flinginairos says it best. We do sometimes inadvertently make it look easy - my Indiana hunt was ONLY easy by chance. I’ve hunted that same property 3 years in a row and heard nothing one year, had a gobbler fail to commit, and then COMPLETELY bungle another hunt by packing up and just as I was packed out pops a tom who never gobbled. Keep it up, you will get there. I’ve been hunting turkeys for 12 years and in many ways - most ways - I am novice. I can call REALLY well which helps and the rest is just listening to my mentors!!!

Maybe luck or providence plus our effort is the key. We only control half of the hunt the other half is uncontrollable

How many acres is the property? Last year was my first year turkey hunting and I learned pretty quick that you can cover 50 acres (property I have access to) pretty quick and if no birds are around you are out of luck. So this year doing mostly state land. I want to be able to roam and go after birds without worrying about them heading to private.

also, for locating birds, did you put them to bed the day before? Our season in NY just opened and after 7pm the birds starting gobbling like crazy on the roost. Helps you know where to set up in the morning. They'll shock gobble to almost anything - naturally to crows, geese, owls, coyote howls, even gun shots in the distance (happened the other day for me)
