I've done it all, I built houses, fought forest fires, trimmed trees and most recently spent 15 years as a professional engineer designing fiber optic equipment for cable TV and telephone companies.

But I traded it all in to answer emails about where's my order......

Now that's funny.

Ha! You know its a mental thing! After 27 years of doing it (fingers and toes intact), feels pretty safe! Now, being new to dangling from a rope and butt sling at 25ft up a tree, Saddle hunting has a higher pucker factor for me at the moment!

Thank you for starting this thread. It makes me feel like I know you all a little bit.

Medical Physicist in a radiation oncology department.
That sounds like a pretty interesting job! What all does that entail? What’s a days work look like you if you don’t mind me asking?

I have a masters degree and I am certified by the American Board of Radiology (ABR). I do treatment planning for patients, calculations, calibrations and QA on all of our different equipment and commissioning of new techniques and equipment.

A typical day consists of me doing treatment planning during the day and squeezing in QA when the equipment is available. This is my busiest time of year because we have QA that is done annually which is time consuming. There ends up being a lot of late nights or extra days worked on the weekends.

A little of my work day

@fawnzy I wish I could give this a triple like!

As I posted above I've been designing and supporting the manufacture of position and pressure sensors for aircraft applications for almost thirty years. Needless to say I'm an aviation nut and really enjoy this stuff. What aircraft are you on? You could be relying on components I've designed to provide your flight control surface position information. Its a small world huh?

That was a 737NG 700.
Do your components go to many manufacturers or one specifically?

I'm part of a very large corporation and we have content on all manufacturers. Our local design group /manufacturing facility's biggest customer is Boeing although we have local content on Bombardier, Airbus and a multitude of military aircraft. It just so happens that I am the RDE (responsible design engineer) for the High Lift Position, Skew Position and Brake Pressure sensors that are used in the 737's. Next time you activate the Flaps you can say you know a guy.:D

@redsquirrel cool stuff man, it sounds like you stay pretty busy! I have tons of respect for anybody in radiology. I know how to take Xrays and read them for dental purposes, but the physics behind it all is way over my head. Very complicated, tedious and precise! I’m sure your patients appreciate your hard work.
