Your climbing method.

@PJC will do. Might take me a bit because I am still waiting for a few pieces in the mail. In the meantime, I based a majority of my setup off of a youtube video by @JCLINE84 . The only real difference was he is using a Madrock Lifeguard and I went with the Madrock Safeguard.

Made my first sit with SRT setup this afternoon in freelance faahion. Liking it, presets will be handy as well.

That's great to hear. I'm looking forward to using it. Are you using a Delta Link or something similar for your girth hitch or just a loop with knot? After some research, it seemed I came across a lot of people saying the Delta Link helps a bunch on the rope retrieval. I think I got the maillon Rapide Delta Link

I use the delta link and even with that sometimes rope retrieval can be a pain. I can’t imagine trying it with rope on tope friction.

Usually the annoying retrievals are where there is adjacent brush interfering with the retrieval paracord.

Lately I have been hooking my retrieval paracord to the eye of my rope instead of to the delta link. I think that works better.

Cool. Looks simple enough. I don’t understand all the hardware terms. Are you wearing only a Kestrel? No need for a Rock Climbing Harness, right?

The Delta Link is helpful. Rope retrieval (and initial placement) on the tree I was in was kind of a pain, mostly for a variety of fixable reasons, and I need to tweak the connection knot to the Delta Link (among other things).

Correct. I didn't either when I started looking at . Questions led to more research for me until I figured it out. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about it. I'm still figuring it all out myself, but I'll share what I can. @pesqimon Good to know, thanks!

What connection knot where you using? I was going to use a double fisherman's

I wear my kestrel. Instead of using my normal bridge, I loop a hollowblock through my bridge loops to form a shorter bridge and hook the safeguard to that. This brings the belay device closer to you and away from the hand ascender(petzl acension, with a foot loop down to my left foot). I choose to back the lifeguard up with an autoblock clipped to my lineman loop, primarily for descent.

I just had a figure 8 on a bight that I'd been using for testing without the link. The excess rope and loop size snagged a bit.

Mostly you want to get a setup you know is safe, and then figure out how it annoys you and fix those issues. Don't try to get it perfect out of the box, just get climbing with something that's safe and backed-up, and go from therw . There's an equipment list in @JCLINE84's thread that is a fine starting point.

Instead of hooking your retrieval line to the link end of the girth hitch try hooking it to the rope itself just inside of the loop where it passes thru the link (on the other side of the girth hitch). When you pull the retrieval line it just pulls the tag end of the rope up freely thru the link and loosens the girth hitch. I have been doing this all year with no retrieval issues. Most of the time the girth hitch loosens completely and falls from the tree. If it doesn't, the tag end then pulls out of the link and then I can just pull the link down since its not hitched anymore.

When used to hook it up on the link end I often had trouble getting the girth hitch loose because you need to pull the rope all the way around the tree to get enough slack in the loop for it to drop.

Tried spurs, sticks, stepps, and went back to a cranford screw in....much easier to pack in and out and screw in so easy its a no brainer to me.

You have a link to that YouTube video? Searched his handle and came up empty.

Do pay attention to your brake hand especially with a grigri....

And there are lots of alternate methods also. This is just one example.

Where are you attaching the Delta link? I've been tying paracord to the rope just before it goes into the loop (figure 8). It works but you definitely have to pull all the stretch out before it gets going! I can't help but think I'll eventually have to ascend the tree a second time to fix a problem.

Plan this year is to use SRT again for public land trees I plan on hunting more than a couple of times along with either the Lone Wolf hand climber or the Predator as a platform. Will be using the Wild Edge Stepps for both climbing and as the platform on mobile pubilc land hunts. For my private land sits I intend to use spurs for climbing along with the above mentioned platform options. I hunt several different Michigan counties and need to check with the CO's (conservation officers) in those areas to verify if spurs are allowed. Since the climbing rules here in Michigan seem to be a little open to interpretation I want to verify with COs individually responsible for areas that they are ok to use.
Yep, I'm replying to my own post. But I wanted to show how quickly my process evolved this year. The post above is from the tail end of June.

As it turned out I didn't use SRT once this year. I only sat more than once in a couple of trees all year so I never preset anything.

I only ended up hunting public land so no spur usage.

I used my WildEdge Stepps less than 10 times when I knew I was going to a spot where the best tree was a leaner. In these instances I used the @Cain method and two Stepps as a platform.

The vast majority of my hunts I used the single stick method using a modified Hawk Helium with an @DaveT1963 style aider. I exclusively used the Predator platform with this method. I am now so comfortable with this I can get set up at 25 feet in less than 15 minutes even on a tree with limbs.

I rappelled from the tree 100% of the time, even with the Stepps. I just stopped at each one and took it off on the way down.

I think there's a lot of this in general. No technique is perfect, we're always learning more, and a minor shift from expected patterns can shift the balance. Also I am finding methods that I found absolutely outlandish when I joined this fall to look much more attractive now. Having an SRT setup and the option to rappel is a key factor in this.

I’m thinking the same thing. Don’t know why I gotta keep looking at different stuff lol. I haven’t even received my WE steps and already I’m looking at new ways to climb. FML.

As with everything there are multiple ways to SRT but my equipment list and approximate cost are as follows:

Madrock Safeguard Ascender: Approx. $90
Ropeman 2: Approx. $40
Petzel Right Foot Ascender: Approx. $80
CMI Micro Pulley: Approx. $25
Rope and a couple of Carabiners

For the record I swapped out one of the carabiners and the micro pulley for a Petzel Rollclip Z roller and carabiner in one. Approx. $50

I'm sure there's less expensive methods but this is what I use.
