I built these aiders over the weekend per the instructions of peterk1234 and so far they are working as advertised. I was able to easily space the stepps 5' apart and if I wanted to stretch I could get another 6inches. I have found the system really easy and the only thing I'm trying to work through is a little slack I'm getting on the hook of the knaider but I may just need some more practice. Overall I think this is a great method.
I did the same thing and have been practicing it. I really like its ease of use and the legs doing the heavy work. I used a hook off of a tie down strap I had laying around. It has rubber on it and works really well.

I'm all in with the knaider on my right leg. It's the left leg aider that I need to figure out better, if I use it at all.

I made a diy version of the easy aider by metolius. Moosejaw has it for $33.

So how tall are you? I'm curious if I can expect similar spacing, I haven't tried this yet as I'm still injured. If anyone else that's tried this can chime in with their spacing and height I would appreciate it. I'm 6'0" and am hoping to get pretty high with 8 steps.

I'm 6 foot tall and 212 pounds (athletic style build). I'm putting the steps at chin/mouth level (about 5'2"). It will work for me in winter/heavier clothes at this height as well. I tried top of my head and I could make it work but not comfortable.

I initially tried it while being tethered but it was impossible. You need to use a linesman belt. I think you should be able to get 5 feet between steps pretty comfortably.

i'm going to be 42 this fall if that helps. I was looking for something I can do while I age. This uses all leg muscles for climbing which will help.

5' for each step is still pretty slick, thanks for the info, I think I'm going to always carry 8, it's compact and I'm not all that worried about a few extra pounds, so I should be able to get to 40' which I don't think will happen all that much. I'm planning on using a poor man's tree squeeze for my lineman belt, I'll put up some pictures once I actually climb it. I'm a curious if the my tree squeeze will get in the way while climbing. I'm also gonna dip my hooks into that plastic tool handle stuff, hoping that works for reducing noise.

I'm right around 6' (Maybe a quarter inch shy). 5' was fairly easy to accomplish and I was placing the step close to the same level as HomeBrew and was roughly at 5'3". Like him if I put it higher than that I could do it but it was a little tougher so I would say a good rule of thumb for people might be chin to mouth height for the step unless someone has really short or long legs which may affect the spacing a bit. I plan on carrying no more than 5 stepps with this method. That will get me 25+ feet in an ideal tree and if I find one that for some reason requires a little closer spacing I should still easily be over 20ft which is plenty good in most situations for me.

I was planning on calling 8 as well. I was thinking 5-6 steps and 2 extras for getting around tree. I couldn't swing the predator platform this year. I just got talked to by my wife about my spending... Not too worried yet though :)

Yeah I'm not getting a Mantis or a Predator either, too much money for me, too many other things that I need, like more bow's and guns to start with. Plus I had zero issues with my RCH/Sitdrag/Fleece setup last year, plus I have 2 platforms and I just picked up an old school LW seat from a buddy for almost nothing, lol. Pretty excited about that one!

I will try to get some close up videos made of both aiders in action. The short one is pretty obvious. The longer aider probably needs a visual to help understand what is going on with the shock chord and carabiner. The shock chord is not necessary, but boy does it make things run smooth.

^^^^that would be very helpful. I didn't fully understand the shock cord and how it was attached. I had left it off and was just pulling up my foot with the aider attached and then unclipping.

After seeing this in action, I think this will be my go too for pine trees and climbing spurs for hardwoods. Pretty hard to avoid climbing a pine down here unless you’re in a bottom
Great idea.

I've tried pretty much every climbing method legal to use on public land, and I settled in on fixed aiders on each stepp made out of tubular webbing. I'm 6'3 and find it's easier not to stretch it too much. I strap each stepp at chest height, use a linemans belt, and head on up. I've stretched 6 stepps to 30' before. They easily and comfortably get me to 22-24' even in bulky clothing without overextending. I fit 6 stepps with aiders, and 3 without (4 if I know i'm going to be on a big tree) for my platform. I have the 12 stepp bag and it all fits in. Extra 2 minutes at base of tree setting up the bag for my original ascent, and an extra 2 minutes at the base of the tree packing them in neatly. I also tie the loops around the main leg of the stepps, and lay over the crossbar. Makes me feel a little better. Hanging from just that bar would spook me, though i'm sure it's fine.

A nice dual purpose tool too - you and a friend each using a stepp with the aider around a deer's neck makes a great dragging tool. Girth hitch around neck, grab crossbar and start dragging.

I've tried the aider from Wild edge, but haven't gotten to a level of comfort yet to see it being easier and simpler than individual aiders. This is an interesting set up though, i'll probably give it shot over the next few weeks. I keep all my methods in the truck. It seems like certain setups go well for certain hunting circumstances and individual trees. I like to be prepared. nice work coming up with a great method.

I took advantage of free shipping and ordered the 5 stepp bag today. 5 stepps gets me nearly to 35 feet if I push it and 25-30 feet with the knaider. I love how light and compact this system is.

I have two of these and have been trying to figure out how to reduce the bulk. Pulling your foot up makes it easy to make a 30 inch move with an aider

Well, I can admit when I'm wrong. I spent a half hour at the sewing machine this morning, and gave this method a whirl. I'm sold. I'm now down to 7 stepps being carried in the woods (four to height, 3 for platform/extra height if necessary). It took no time at all, seeing as I was already comfortable with the stepps and linemans belt. Great work on this fellas. Besides the obvious weight reduction, another advantage is laying my stepp bag sideways in bottom of my pack versus standing up in there. with 10 stepps, it was vertical and not efficient packing stuff in, or I had it on my shoulder outside of pack.
