I went out in Rhode Island public Sunday afternoon. Not super hot, like 85, but ridiculous humidity probably pushing up from that storm. Took it slow and I was still a sweaty mess by the time I hit the woodline. Sat to cool off, then grabbed a tree on the edge of the swamp thicket where there was already a smallish rub and tons of fresh poop. Got up the tree with my noisy Muddy Pro Sticks and something didn't seem right - left my friggin' Kestrel back in the truck about a half mile away. Left everything at the tree then did the sweaty march back out where I started the old diesel up and sat in the A/C for 20 minutes before heading back in.

A little teaze of breeze every now and then, took forever to stop dripping sweat. Not much moving except a few hikers in the distance. Finally at last light a spike came in, and I didn't want to drag him out in this heat. Hopefully he smartens up and grows real big. Broke the ice, hopefully I'll get back in stride AND the weather breaks in favor of walking around in the woods!

Alright had a fun hunt tonight! Saw my first 2 bucks of the season. Had 3 chances to shoot a 75" that I think was a 3.5 year old. He was a very pretty deer just not much of a rack. Too early in the season so he got a pass. Also I got into a stand off with a big snapping turtle in the creek I was walking to my spot. He won when he turned around a stood his ground and stared me down lol.

Still a couple weeks away from season, so no hunting for me.
But, we have gotten a lot of good rain. Several of the spots I hunt have gotten just at/over 6” today alone. That should fill the waterways well for season!

Second sit of the season, first deer sighting. Wow what a difference a few days makes. We went from upper 80’s low 90’s to a whopping 36* this morning. Mosquitos so bad you didn’t want to go out and today I haven’t spotted a single bug.

Anyhow, onto the deer. I’m sitting a spot most would think a little odd and would pass by not waisting time here but I’ve witnessed does bedding in this thicket and it has a overlooking view of a 2 year old clear cut. The observation part has payed off. Just after first light a bachelor group of bucks came out. 1-4 pt 2-small 8s and a nice 10-12ish. I only have my 8x20’s and they where about 150ish yards out. I was going to find a tree to ambush them in the morning but 3 of them have returned to the suspected bedding area, a bowl of about 4 acres, surrounded by mature trees/low creek/marsh. No big boy. Not sure if he’s bedding on the hill ( found a lot of rubs there scouting and the wind would be perfect for him) or if he continued on. Just in case he is on the hill I’ll have to take a different route out. The small bit of wind we have is supposed to switch so I may swing by to pick a tree for the morning.

Couple of does in the cut now.

Good luck to everyone out!
