Flex Football DIY...meh...

@always89y
Do you notice a comfort difference in the pleated/flex version versus the regular version?

Unfortunatly, no. The non-pleated version is plenty comfy. The pleated version is no less comfy though. If I was an all day sitter, there might be an advantage...but not for me.

Well at least you tried it. I assumed that woud be your findig when you first started that thread but heck you never know. It sounds like the juice isn't worth the squeeze by adding a flex/pleat to this shaped saddle.

Would you say that you found if geometry is correct coverage is less of a factor?

Thats a perfect way to sum it up.
I will say that I do think there are folks that would probably benefit from the pleat. Taller folks come to mind. Also, as stated before, long term sitters as the bottom main webbing can be moved down behind the legs.

Not trying to derail your thread but I wanted to say Thank You @always89y! You inspired me to break out the thread injector and actually make that saddle I've been threatening to make for a while now. My first one was very similar to your "Sally" but I thought she was a little too skinny for me. I followed her up with this one. I'm calling her "Rosie" (AC/DC song reference). She's 15 inches wide rather than 12. I left off the lineman's loops (I just hook directly into the bridge loops regardless) and the molle loops as I only put a couple accessory loops on my saddles anyway. My workmanship isn't in your class but it'll do for who it's for.

I took her out for a test drive tonight and I have got to say this is easily the most comfortable saddle I have ever sat in. It stayed put and never needed adjustment once from the time I put it on. Thanks again for the push and the football shape. What a difference! :)

I know you are a one sticker, and like me, dont use the linemans loops often...if at all. But, when you DONT have them, do you miss them? Ever found yourself wanting them?

Very interesting. What about folding and pleating the mesh along the webbing to make the outer circumference of the mesh smaller creating more extra fabric in the middle? Does that make sense? Like the pleating around the waist belt of some khakis, that way there is more mesh spacing for your rear but not the central flex pleating you have tested here.
I like the idea. The only problem I see is that the pleats would expand under pressure, uncontrolled. Maybe if you put some grommet holes and weaved a rope through that can release/contract pleats based on an individuals comfort level...hmmm. Gonna give it a go.

This would change the positioning of the bridge loops. THIS is where I would find the adjustable nodes to come in handy.

This would also create high points in the top webbing and might be uncomfortable.

Nope. I attach my lineman's belt to my bridge loop on one side before I climb. If I need the lineman's I wrap it around the tree and hook the free end to the bridge loop on the other side. For me its easier to find the bridge loops and it spreads the lineman's load evenly across the top and bottom saddle straps.

An additional benefit for me since I use my lineman's as an adjustable bridge once at hunting height is that one side is already attached to the bridge loop. I just have to pass the free end over, attach it to the other loop and then hook it into my tether biner before removing the amsteel bridge.

Smart! Are you using a separate shorter bridge for climbing?

I use my bridge loops for my lineman's as well. I don't find myself wishing I had a separate set. I would rather save the weight and complexity (not that there is much of either, it is just more 'stuff' on the saddle).

What is the best geometry?
I am new and don’t know all the lingo for saddle types and shapes.
Football I get but I want to learn more than just draw a football as tall as my rear. What geometry should I start with to customize to me?

Thanks

Whats your size?
Generally, 12-15 tall and 24-27 inches wide (center to center) with the ends being about 5 inches tall.

I think the pleats would work out better on the sides, near the bridge loops and gradually fade to just the regular material towards the middle of the seat portion. If that makes sense. It would add a little more cupping action. Think about how all of these mask everyone is wearing are made. they are pleated towards the ends but not in the middle. Maybe a few smaller pleats, say 1/4 to 1/2 inch or so. It could allow less of a severe football shape which is kind of difficult to sew 2 inch webbing to. I may try to make one like this because I sit a lot but I dont like the extra material the full pleat creates

This is so funny - I was just looking at my daughter’s coronavirus face mask yesterday and had the exact same thought! Perfect tree saddle shape. I’m gonna have to try this out....

Here’s my latest build incorporating a couple of mini pleats on the sides like the coronavirus masks we mentioned earlier in this thread. Kind of a cross between a wrap2r and a cruzr. Seems pretty comfy after a quick trial today....

Thanks for all the idea sharing, guys!

Might be worth putting a strip of 1 inch webbing on each side between the 2 inch webbing where the pleats are. Just to lock everything together

Loos great! I like the idea that @JCLINE84 threw out. How do you like those floating leg straps? Tried it on a saddle once.

I admire your work. It looks like high quality stitching, something I cannot do. Some of the saddles I have purchased do not look that good
