Random Musings From Your Resident Contrarian and Underage Curmudgeon

I hate on any forum, on Facebook, or the internet for that matter, when people get all bent out of shape about someone asking the same question that has been asked a million times already.

So what. Just keep on scrolling. Yeah someone could use the search function to answer that question, but they didnt. Big whoop. It takes just as much time to answer that question that's been asked 12,345,219 times before as it does to go all angry search function nazi on them.

That's my rant, I like to eat deer.

First, I'm disappointed in myself that I'm so addicted to this forum that I was tempted to try to type an answer from the tree during a prime time rut sit (shaking my head at myself). Luckily my will power was good and I postponed the inevitable until now.

Let me also lead with the fact that I am a certifiable curmudgeon. I've earned it, I'm getting old and crotchety. Don't believe me ask my wife.

I for one love my rubber boots. They may be warm and make my feet sweat but they slip on and off. I don't need to struggle to reach my feet and lace up and tie my boots. For you young guys you may laugh now but as you age you'll reach a point where your feet get farther and farther away from your shoulders. I'm beginning to feel like a T-Rex trying to put on a pair of socks. :tearsofjoy: While we're on the subject of boots, why is it you can't hardly find a pair of hiking boots without the speed lace hooks . . . . I hate them. I've taken so many falls hooking the lace hook from one boot into the lace of the other. Give me some simple d-rings or even plain old eyelets.

Now that I'm started, the thing that continues to bug me about a lot of archery hunters is the overestimation of effective archery range. I'm not picking on solely on crossbow hunters here, this goes for everyone, but if the boot fits . . . . I don't care if you can hit a quarter 4 out of 5 times from 50 yds or if your bow shoots 400ft/sec. If your arrow can't get to your target in less than a 1/3 of a second after the speed of sound carries the sound of the shot there it's too far. The difference is that game as a target can/will move at the sound of the shot and the amount of movement in even 1/3 of second is pretty severe. I shoot a 70# wheelie bow spitting my hunting arrows at 275ft/sec. I can pretty effectively hit a grapefruit at 40 yds 4 out of 5 times. There's a reason I set up 15yds downwind of the heavily traveled trail I was sitting on tonight. It gives me a better chance of a clean kill and recovery.

As far as hunting from a saddle, the above is one of the 2 primary reasons I chose a saddle as my hunting tool. Spoiler alert, neither of those reasons involve weight. I maybe lost 10-15lbs of weight in my systems going from a climber to a saddle but the weight doesn't pack as well as it did in the climber so that is a wash for me. The first reason is that I can access my hunting area in a more stealthy manner than I could with my climbing treestand. That thing seemed to reach out and grab twigs to clang off as I tried to sneak into a spot in the morning. At least with the saddle its only me tripping making noise as I walk in. Secondly, the saddle gives me many more options of trees "in position" to hunt out of. In the climber I looked for straight limbless pairs of trees to be climbable and provide some cover. With the saddle I have many more options available so I can focus my efforts closer to the area of interest and limit the time it takes an arrow to get there.

Dump pouch can be good to keep some FAK stuff on your person. I hate ppl pushin first aid but they shove it down in their pack. Good luck getting to that IFAK when your on your back 20ft below with a helium step UYA.

I also hate acronyms

I hate when ppl hang stuff from tree to mark their way in. I usually take the white trash down.

You just made a fancy “blood trail marker” that reflects light? You can buy a roll of surveyors tape for $.88 that was literally made for marking trails in any light condition. Stop Making things diy all the time

When I see a stack of rocks to mark trail, Those get the sweet chin music every time no exceptions.

If you “save” your camp spot on public land by leaving your crappy walmart tent or run down trailer a week in advanced without occupying the site within first 24 hours and every night there after. Im coming for you

I hate deer camps that hang signs with a cute deer camp name nailed into the tree. They usually get left illegally and the camps are usually filthy with fire rings full of stuff that doesnt burn and micro trash everywhere outside it. Not to mention multiple fire rings because the last guys location wasent good enough. Just dig a dam hole
And burry it. Gkys

Old men who complain at deer camp that they cant ride trails anymore and “they” are closing them all down when the trail wasent legal to begin with and you have never heard of the actually trail system in the area.

I hate OHVs especially ones with a huge lift, mud tires, and speakers being pulled by matching lifted truck. $65k Riding around bumping top 40 junk country, yeti cooler in back and yeti wife with a beer belly that looks like she would rather just be at home than riding shotgun in one of the worst financial decisions you have made together since birth of baby number 1-5

Posts about blood trail help (guilty). We are NOT there and didnt see your crappy shot on the “monster”. Back out and look next day then move on.

I cant stand to watch people drink soda pop. Its 2020. Where have you been?

My dumb posts

Something tells me we'd get along just fine. :tearsofjoy:

I hate that I have a few days off to possibly get out and bow hunt 4 hours from home but I tweaked my left elbow while on vacation. It keeps getting more and more sore. Looks like it maybe just grouse, squirrels, and ducks for me if my elbow doesn't heel between now and Friday.

When I watch the video I did on not carrying a pack with the hybrid now, I get anxiety seeing how much stuff I lay out on the table. And then I think about how most people bring considerably more stuff into the woods.

Out of curiosity, what's a scenario you'd see yourself using the climber?

I hate when others answer a question not asked of them.

That notwithstanding, i have a buddy that only hunts with a climber. He has family with some access to nice property. Maybe once a year I get the call, bucks are on their feet, I have a great climber tree picked out for you. All day rut hunt, pick you up at 3AM. Guess who is packing the Treewalker, HBS and nice lunch and thermos. Hunting from a saddle is an option, not the one true way.

Also, I hate people who treat saddle hunting as the one true way and signal that by taking selfie’s with themselves in a saddle using a ladder stand as a platform. FFS, park your arse on the ladder. Using the stand for a saddle platform, you are facing the wrong way.

While I am getting it off my chest, I hate that saddle hunters preach any tree, but only talk about high side or low side of a leaning tree. That would be two positions, one at 0 degrees and another at 180 degrees. Last I know, we have 360 degrees to position around a tree.

Mature row pine plantations with thick scrub underneath while gun and muzzleloader hunting. I can climb much faster and higher with my Summit or Xstand than I could comfortably with any saddle method there and more importantly, sweat free. In this situation, it is worth the hassle for me to carry it for the ease of use.

Check out your xstand climber. There was a recall.

I need to remember that I'm no longer getting old, I am actually old. That way I don't injury myself doing something stupid that I was could do with no problem.

Haha I got a good reminder the other day with a small fall. I don’t bounce anymore like I used to when I was a kid.

also, get a crossbow! Elbow be damned!

Don't get me started.

I hate ebikes. I hate ebikes on public land. I mostly hate ebikes when used illegally on public land. I'm sorry but if you're not willing or able to walk X miles to the spot then you shouldn't hunt there. You're old and can't walk anymore? I'm sorry. Time will catch up to me and everyone else someday too. There are plenty of overlooked spots within walking distance.

I hate illegal ATV and dirt bike use on public land. I hate even more the blatant disregard when a hunter uses it as described in my ebike rant.

Seen this last weekend in Missouri from out staters...called the man on them Missouri has enough problems with people breaking “game” laws

Thx, and I am aware of the recall and is was for different, newer models. I have the 11 lb version, still my gold standard when comparing weight to saddle setups.

wonder if that thing would be as easy to climb with if the platform was only 18” wide. Or better yet 16” wide. Even if it limited the size of tree you could get in. I could see it being lighter and most importantly not grabbing everything in the woods.

now I wonder if anyone has ever used two lone wolf hand climbers, and a saddle. Super compact, weight under 12lbs, have the ability to stand lean and sit facing tree or away.
