The JRB Climbing Method

I’m starting my trial period with the WLR hitch in my JRB climbing set up. It catches well, easy to ascend, breaks easy and doesn’t seem to lock down after extended use. More testing to see if it’s a winner for this upcoming season. I’ll need to get more cord as well because this hitch takes up more length and doesn’t leave me with much room. I had been exclusively single Michoacán’s but still need to try out the doubles. What’s y’all’s go to hitches for JRB climbing?

I am still on the double michocan on my predator rope. I jhave not seen any reason to switch.

Once I get new cord I’m going to try the double Michoacán’s out. The WLR hitches impressed me though at a first glance.

I think you will like it. I am not a big tinkerer,if I find something that works well I will stick with it,unless I find something better.

My hitch cord is suppose to be here today. Plan To tie some jrb hitches. I know the michoacan works well for me on the MRS. If I can find time to play with other options I will. But if they work I will probably stick with it at this point.

Would you feel comfortable using sterling 6mm accessory cord for your saddle bridges tied the way you show so it is doubled? I weigh same as JRB.
Thanks

John, I decided to try your method out last night. Ordered per your shopping list, and followed videos for everything. I only made 2 attempts at the climbing. I can honestly say that I need a lot more tries to say weather I will be truly switching over to this method but I did like it I cannot say that it was effortless but I could be that far out of shape also. I do see alot of situations that this method could be very useful so I truly plan to get better at it and will probably add it to the tool box. I mostly 1 stick rappel and use spikes but this will be a huge asset for an area that I hunt that has very mature trees some with bases that are 5-6 foo tin diameter. I really do appreciate all your time and effort in developing this as well as the very detailed videos that you have put together. Thanks!!

X2 on the double Michoacán hitches and not seeing any reason to switch. I'm using different rope & cord, though. I used 6mm Sterling TRC on 8mm Mammut Alpine Dry dynamic rope for most of last season. It was cheap and the hitches worked great! My only complaint with that setup is that it felt like climbing with it was inefficient due to the bounce/stretch of the dynamic rope - especially late season when I was climbing higher and using crotches 40' or more off the ground. (There's a lot of stretch in that much dynamic rope!) I'm switching to 6mm Sterling TRC on 8mm Teufelberger Rescue Tech static rope this season to eliminate the stretch. The double Michoacán grabs & holds really reliably, but it advances SO easily, even with this smaller diameter rope & cord, and even after it's been weighted.

I was on mammut all last year too but I really liked climbing on oplux for the first time yesterday,

@John RB or anybody else - is there a pictorial step-by-step on any of your knots? I'm trying to commit the compact variant to memory and keep having to refer to the video. Before I go make my own pictorial I thought I'd see if anyone else beat me to it.

I’m thinking about doing a JRB system using the sterling super static 9mm and using sterling 5.9 powercord for my hitches. Any thoughts?
The Technora core of the Powercord self abrades when used as a bridge, or twin hitches in this system, after time they will thin, and then break. Having a cover keeps it hidden unless closely examined frequently.

Iron_llama, I trialed the 423 and 523 JRB knots and they worked ok but were difficult to tie and dress properly. I switched to the double michoacan and am sticking with that. I like the redundancy in the JRB method though and plan to do more work with it in the coming weeks. I'd recommend you look up the double michoacan and trial that for your set up. For my experiments I used 7mm and 8mm on predator. Others will have more experience but this was mine.

It was @Brocky who alerted me on the properties of the powercord and I have to agree with him. Yes, that combination works but the cord is stiffer and so if you get it jammed, its harder to unjam. TRC is better. And the flexibility of the standard Sterling 7mm cord also works well even on 8mm rope.

I have seen this method mentioned a lot and every time I try to dig into it I keep coming back to the same conclusion….just too “busy”. Busy as in there just seems to be an awful lot going on. That is not helped by the fact that as I go down the YouTube rabbit hole there are so many videos with this setup, that setup, and oh no this week we are doing this new thing.

Then I get into a video and there are numerous other video references where I need to stop and go dig up some other previously released video to see how to tie this that or the other.

I really like that you are sharing your method and taking input and improving and developing new systems. I just wish there was a simple, completely self contained A to Z video of how to get started with this method in the least complicated way as possible.

Did you see how I climb JRB? It’s very simple. Ropes, 2 hitches, and a Garda foot loop.

it really is simple.

A rope, two hitches, a Garda foot loop.

Cordage choices and personal preferences are where options come to bear and it can seem more complicated than it is.

a good starting point is to buy what @JRB recommends and just do as he does in his recent videos.

I had a hard time with the footloop. I tried it a few times and had a hard time not spinning around. Then trying to run my knots up. Monkey football. Maybe it takes some practice. But I haven't been itching to try it again. MRS is a little more work. But a lot easier motion to me. I gave my self a rope burn on my index finger. So waiting for that to heal up some more.
