Strings silencer material?

Not claiming the best, just seem to be what I gravitate towards. I’m interested to try the Amsteel puff.

what knot do y’all use on your whiskers? I’ve tried the the three wrap cinch on top and then bottom, finished with square knot. I’m trying a nail knot on the other end this go around.

I use a constrictor knot to really hold the amsteel then I put couple half hitches per side and cut 1/2” tag ends and then pull strands with a awl then use a small metal brush to comb out the amsteel70880445253__5CE011DA-459E-43E5-A741-D2E76522235A.jpeg

So you install yours like a whisker vs. putting it between the string? Is that because you shoot endless loop strings or do you prefer it for a difference reason?

When I shoot endless and Flemish I insert a awl thru the middle of the 1.5” cut section of amsteel and slide down to location I want it pulling thru the endless or Flemish loop and once in location I tape the ends to string and that gives me room to really tie down my wax covered string I make knot then really crank it down then I’ll make another knot on opposite side and use square knot to finish it then I take tape off and pull apart bundles and move it over so I can give 3 half hitches onto string then move to other side and repeat then snip off to leave 1/2” tag end and fluff out my strands

Your best bet now days is Amazon for raw unprocessed wool. You might have to wash the crud off and comb them out but we’ll worth it for the silencing properties
Actually messaged someone on Etsy who made their own yarn, he told me he scours his stuff and probably isn’t what I want. Gave me a name to a gentleman with on Facebook how who his spins his own yarn. He’s mailing me a 2.5 gallon ziplock of raw Navajo-Churro fleece.

I’m going to try raw wool and see, saw some old archery talk threads mentioning going that way.

Make a mountain muffler string silencers out of it the best combo in my opinion for recurves

Some more info on this? I see the string silencers Mountain Muffler makes, but it seems to be yarn. Very similar to the Omnivore Quiver Navajo string silencers I currently use.

I’m not getting yarn, I’m getting straight raw wool. Was going to tie it in a bundle and slide it through my Flemish string, like described below.

Well raw wool is the way to go and that’s what I learn on from the originator of said silencers 20+ years ago and Steve who now owns mountain muffler makes a awesome string and I haven’t been on his site in awhile makes them out of amsteel I last heard
You want 1/2” thick hanks about 1” long and when you make your Flemish you want to make your loop and go down maybe 2 to 3” depending the on the curve of your limb then you insert a hank of wool then twist then insert another piece and twist and make sure it’s tight and you go down maybe 2 to 2.5” with wool inserted and finish your Flemish then do the other side and finish your string then you pull string tightly and fluff out your wool then with sharp scissors snip here and there to make a football shape then you can make your puffs and insert into string and shoot couple times and snip into a tight ball and trim up the muffler partIMG_4946.jpegIMG_4946.jpeg

That looks great, thank you. I’m definitely going to try it.

How you get yours so purty and round?
Cut them 1.5” then tie them down in middle real tight then separate then get a poster card and fold it in half the cut the size hole you like 1 3/8” then fold over string and rubber and rotate slowly and snip here and there until the silencers pass thru without touching the card stock

Looks like your rubber whiskers are larger and maybe that helps it stand up more. I’m just using jig skirts from bass fishing. But what you said is basically exactly what I did. What string do you use to tie it specifically?

I use bowstring material anywhere from b50 to x99 heavily waxed to tie my silencers and when I make wool puffs I use dental floss as it lays better in the string. My silencers are little thicker as I’m not a fan of bass skirts as they wear out faster I feel. I have to cut them real short like 1/2” to stand up

Cat whiskers are hard to beat for noise reduction. They work equally well for trad bows and compound bows.

They don't soak up water and beggar's lice and cockleburs won't stick to them. You can trim them long and have spider legs or trim them short into a round ball.

The only downside is they eventually dry rot. There's rubbers that don't do that (ranger bands). I'm half tempted to make my own from thin sliced ranger bands.
