Ditto. My experience is that deer are just generally more comfortable at night. Light color doesn't matter.I have a headlamp with green, red or white options. The white light is brighter with a high, medium, low. I've used all 3 colors just messing around going in and out and have had them bust me on all 3 and conversely not react to all three.
I prefer white to see better and make less noise because it's not so dim and shadowy to me. I honestly think I've had deer react less to the white on high beam pointed right at them. I guess I have no clue as to how many I may have spooked around me I can't see with the various colors.
This is interesting. Can you expand a bit on how colored light messes with your eyes?I always used red light. So quick touch on the back story I’m color blind so “colored” lights really mess with my eyes and often hurt my head so I typically walk in by moonlight or white light if I get spun around. (Been hunting the same woods me entire life so that’s not often) however I have the hex light quiver with the green lights in it and if I do need any form of light that’s proven to really help me out and it doesn’t seem to mess me up as bad as other lights
honestly don’t know how to really put it in words haha it’s almost as if it messes with my depth perception so I have to focus harder on each step in turn giving me a headache lol but at the same time it just plain out hurts my eyes after a whileThis is interesting. That green stylus light was the best light ever made for shooting hogs after sundown with a stick bow.I started with a green stream light stylus back in the day (30 hrs +), but they got hard to find. Loved that thing.
Now I have a headlamp that has green/red/blue/white. Between green and red the green shows up infinitely better for me. I can barely see past my feet with the red.
I was thinking the same thing. I can turn off the red, and still see as well as before I turned it on pretty quickly. With the green or white, it takes longer to get my full dark vision back. The only benefit I see to red is it doesn't seem to take your night vision away the same way white/full spectrum light does. Don't really see the need to be able to switch back and forth for deer hunting though.

But, the downside is it doesn't seem to throw a beam as far. Pretty much just for up-close use.
Coast or Nebo! Hard to beatI'm trying to decide on a headlamp. Something a little better than the cheap Wal Mart ones. I don't care about the other colors and 14 different push button choices, just a really bright and a dim light to walk and track w/my dog. Looks like good reviews for the Coast lights. My EDC light is a Steamlight and is very bright.
You are correct. I actually spoke to a buck the other morning because I thought it was a bear until I seen the massive set of horns. The eyes were pretty far apart so I assumed it was a bear. I’ve always used white light til I change clothes about 75 yards from my stand then go red. The green light does interest me. A bear with red eyes in the dark is kinda spooky. Well at least to meThe reflective film in a deer's eyes is known as a tapetum. I do believe bears' eyes reflect too.
I'll agree that the options for green headlamps are limited, and when you do find one they are low in lumens. My suggestion is to buy a headlamp with the specs you like and get some transparent film to make it the color you want. Take a look at Sofirn lights, can't be beat for the money. I purchased an expensive headlamp and hand torch from Zebra. Few months after that I stumbled upon Sofirn and I can buy 3 or 4 of them for the price of a Zebra and I'm just as happy with them.I use a bright white light for for walk in but once I get within about 300yds I switch over to my red light.
Green headlamps that aren’t just filters and of good quality are tough to come by
