Best, quietest, rain gear , that won’t break the bank?

For the most part, keeping dry in all conditions versus saving your bank account are pretty much mutually exclusive.

Good rain gear ain't cheap and cheap rain gear ain't good.

As the saying goes: buy once, cry once. I've stopped buying cheap gear unless it's specifically intended to be throw away. Over time, I've found buying the good stuff (which always costs more) costs less in the long run.

YMMV.

The maybe not so good: Not trying to bust your bubble but would like to give you some realistic expectations. In my experience, single layer goretex is barely waterproof for more than a short duration in light to medium rain. So don’t be surprised if you get some dampness if sitting for hours in the rain. That said I would be surprised if this isn’t a fair bit better than the cabelas space suit. If you want true water proof for hours from a goretex jacket you need to get Into the 2-3 layer goretex. It’s not a hard and fast rule but when leaning heavily on DWR treatments it’s part of what you deal with.

The good: There are some even more expensive jackets that don’t include pit zips (wild) so that is a nice feature at that price. If it does better than I expect then that is be fair deal.

Please stand out in the next rain storm for 2+ hours and report back! Wait, I already have an expensive rain jacket. As you were.

Additional side bar: one problem with my rain jacket is that I’m scared to wear it through the woods for fear of ripping and tearing it on the plethora of privet, thorns, and greenbriar. I bought one jacket that I use for all of my camping, hunting, hiking, skiing, etc. and I want it to last so I end up using my cabelas stuff and still being super careful not to rip it either. Both pack down extremely small which is great. The KUIU Yukon jacket I tried is tough and can handle thorns and brush as well as rain but is heavier, louder, and doesn’t pack down well at all.
Reviews say it’s 2.5 layer Gore Tex with a water proof rating of 28000mm/24hr. It’s the only jacket I’ve found close to those specs with pit zips for around $100.

This is more a hiking/everyday/occasional hunting use rain coat anyway. If I’m ever lucky enough to ever make it to AK or somewhere I need a series rain coat I’ll up my budget then.

Even the very best is only temporairy in the blacktail woods .all things get shreaded here.i ripped at the seam à few different big tough boots in 1 day.its pointless for me to spend money on the best stuff knowing it will still get broken and replaced soon enough.if you want to find any flaws in any hunting gear just bring it to the rain forest of north west oregon for a season or 2 then see what you want to carry after 4 days of rain strait when every bit of nylon strap and cordura on all your gear and packs smells like mold and it wont dry for nothing while every thing from the waist down is shreaded from native and himilayan blackberries with thisttles every inch between snaggs n pine needles in every crevis and bit of mesh.then there is the mud slides.even the walking stick guys fall down

Dang I didn’t see that on the other page. Sweet find! That is very tempting!

How’s the fit on this one? Pack down too?
The fit is regular or average, not tight and not super loose either. It specifically is made to fold and roll into its hood. I can get it down to about the size of two large grapefruit side by side if not slightly smaller.

I haven't tried this out in the rain yet because I got it on an after season sale, but on the surface it seems pretty darn good. Lightweight, quiet enough, and packs down into itself. Reminds me of those windbreaker jackets that were popular in the 90s that would fold up into their own pocket. That's what this does. I got the pants too.

This is a 2xl jacket and 2xl pant in the photo.

Marmot Goretex Jacket I just picked up and the Black Diamond one i already had. I give the edge to the Black Diamond for features I.e. two zippers on the pit zip, pit zip being longer, hood having a semi rigid visor, being quieter, and being slightly longer. I’m sure the marmot jacket will keep me plenty dry which is the most important. I may use the Marmot as a ski shell as it is a tad more roomy. Also asking myself why I bought two rain jackets… wife is asking the same lolDF39B35B-85D8-4AE5-8DB4-908AD4DA73B1.jpeg5719B007-4801-454A-9697-47BE2FD74E08.jpeg

What size did you get? That doesn’t look as short as the pics on the website made it look. How noisy is it?

Mines not getting here until Tuesday.
