Best pack to also pack out meat?

I use a Mystery Ranch Pop Up 38. Carries sticks and a platform easily, the lid holds my essentials and plenty of room in the pack for layers and whatever else you need for the day.

In his bedroom - UPDATE (help)

If you are unsure about the hit, back out. With a dog coming, you don't want to walk all over the trail. Since you found the insert and broadhead I think you have two holes but the arrow is in him which could affect the blood trail but a dog doesn't need blood to track. Where do you think the...

Thanks, I sent a response and shared with my hunting club .

New Saddle Hunter in Southern NY

Welcome from Westchester. My first season with a saddle as well. I'm planning to hunt several DEP properties in Putnam this fall.

    Anybody else hunt these guys?

I grew up rifle hunting blacktails in Mendocino County, A zone. I had the most success with spot and stalk, still hunting or one man drives. Never climbed a tree but sat in a lot of makeshift ground blinds. As you said most do not climb, I don't know anyone out west that uses a tree stand or...

What gear upgrade (if any) will put more deer in my freezer?

After the basics are covered I would say that gear doesn't kill deer so you aren't going to get much help there. If you have the essentials I would look at upgrading clothing so you are more comfortable while out. That or upgrade your arrow system.

    How important is a backpack?

Depends on how much weight you are going to carry. If you want to pack meat than a frame pack is a good idea. Have a large platform and multiple sticks? I'd lean towards a frame pack. If you have a single stick with platform and will drag or drive your deer out of the woods than anything will...

Heavy arrow build help and tips

I am not following why you will lose length if you remove the insert. What inserts are you running and how are then installed? I run RIP TKO 250's with ethics half outs, they add a 1/2" to the end of the shaft. I believe the outsert with sleeve adds more than 1/2" but I have not used them to...

    Broadhead recommendations

I shoot cutthroat broadheads. VPA has single bevels too now. I like that they are solid steel and sharpening is straight forward. Lots of good choices out now.

Best of the "entry level" sticks?

If you want full length I think Hawks are hard to beat. I have xop sticks but have grown tired of the single steps. I have two sets of API Huntin' Sticks that I cut down that I like a lot for the price. I was also able to make a few one sticks with the leftover steps and my XOP standoffs. The...

How big can a platform be before its structurally unsafe without cable support?

There is not a simple answer to your question. It depends on a number of factors; material, thickness, length, weight rating, etc. In theory you could build a very large platform without cable supports but it would be much thicker and heavier or incredibly expensive (exotic material). If this...

    Pack Weight

I have two packs to cover my saddle hunting needs. I bought a small sling pack to carry platform, ropes and a diy one stick for quick hunts and early season. I also have a pop-up 38 if I want/need to pack out a deer, carry extra clothes, multiple sticks, or don't know how far I will set up from...

Who is shooting at 250 spine arrow? Which one?

Victory RIP TKO 250's. I really like them, low gpi but seem very durable. The low gpi means higher FOC with the same components and lower total weight to maintain a little more speed.

    Mission and sticks in a Pop-up 28?

I have the 38. I like the lid for some additional organization. There is no reason the misson and sticks can't go on the load shelf. The sticks may need to be horizontal to keep the standoffs out of the way. I carry my sticks on the outside and my predator goes in the front pouch. Frequently...

    Let's talk EDC knives

I would recommend a mini-griptillian, I carried one for years. When I thought I lost it I grabbed a North Fork to replace it, nice knife but I never loved it. I now carry a ZT0462 with the micarta handle. I got it on clearance for $150, hands down my favorite but it is heavy, not a great...

    victory or goldtip

I think they will both do what you want. I went with Victory RIP TKO 250s because of the low gpi which allows for higher FOC with the same weight components. What diameter are your current arrows? Will you need a new quiver?

    250 Spine Arrow

Using victory RIP TKO 250s with 200gn inserts and 150gn broadheads. Going to drop the insert weight and up the bh to 200+. No complaints on the arrows except price. The gpi is low so I have very high FOC.

Realistic learning curve to saddle hunting

Depends on what you are coming from and how you want to saddle hunt. If you are new to mobile hunting or hunting in general I imagine it may take a while to get comfortable. I think climbing method makes a big difference and that is not strictly saddle related . Some are pretty straight forward...

I have a sig, I really like having the red read out.

    Mystery ranch

The stock straps should be plenty long. I did buy some additional straps so I can strap my sticks and platform to the front of the pack if the meat shelf is full but it isn't necessary. Not sure if the 18 has additional strapping points, the 38 has some small webbing loops on the sides.
