    Favorite tree to climb

Bitternut hickory. They have tight, tough bark, and grow straight. Ash would be awesome if it weren't for the ash borer killing most of them. The bitternut hickory actually looks a lot like ash from a distance.

    Wild edge steps

I use my top step as my platform, and never had an issue. Before I got WE steps, I considered climbing SRT, but it's rare to find limbs low enough in the areas I hunt. Lots of trees with clear trunks.

    Michigan Ticks Alert

Another Sawyer's permethrin user here. I get the 2 pack from Amazon, and dump both into a pump spray bottle so I don't have to constantly pull the trigger. The clothes I treat have a label in them that I put the treatment date on so I know how fresh it is. It's awesome seeing the ticks latch on...

    Cons to the "one-stick" method?

I use 2 WE steps to get where I need to be, which is with my torso about 15 feet off the ground (higher than that where I hunt and you are dealing with a thicket of mid-story ironwood and witch hazel shrubs). Have you tried the knaider swaider? I found it super awkward. I think it might be for...

Anyone using a turkey vest for their gear

Was just testing out my Alps Super Elite vest for that. I like having my tether, range finder, grunt call, and gear retriever on my front. Unfortunately none of the pockets were big enough for the tether. Awesome vest for turkey hunting though! Generally, I find the Alps stuff to be thoughtfully...

    Lesser Known History

New York named a bridge after this Polish revolutionary war hero - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tadeusz_Ko%C5%9Bciuszko Make a trip there, get some good Polish food in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and settle the debate about how to pronounce the name of the bridge!

Lets talk drinking coffee when in the saddle

For my dawn sits, instead of 4 cups of coffee, I limit myself to 2 before getting ready, and avoid drinking any water. Never had a sit interrupted by a bathroom break!

    Crossbow Tree Hanger

I use a WE Step with a rubberized hook I bent around it. The crossbow hangs to my right, and the movement is pretty minimal getting it into shooting position. The first thing I tried was one of those nylon straps with the plastic hooks on it... it definitely didn't inspire confidence. I got the...

How do you backup your Mantis?

Nice and simple backup to the main bridge and tether. Might start doing that myself. My top concern hasn't been the gear failing, but me spacing out doing something stupid. This would also provide insurance against that!

    Guys with big feet

I wear size 14 boots and my 'platform' is simply my top Wild Edge Step. I spent an obscene number of hours up there (thank you COVID), took two deer, and never thought about getting a platform. I alternate between different positions, and take the weight off my feet altogether by kneeling...

    Help with caliber decision!

Plinking and squirrel hunting is like peas and carrots. Plinking and deer hunting? But if there were such a thing as plinking and deer hunting, as others have said, 30-30 would seem to fit the bill, in Model 94 obviously.

A year without buying hunting gear?

I'm sure many of you know about marital negotiations and having to make the case to the wife about getting new toys. As soon as I got into saddle hunting and gear that my life depended on, I decided I'd need to get new gear every year, because of safety of course. The same argument worked for...

Strap on steps for climbing method

I dealt with the fiddle factor of the Wild Edge Stepps (and weight and bulk) by only using two for climbing, and one to hang my gear on. It gets me up about 15 feet, which in most circumstances is as high as I want to be - higher and you're up in the limbs.

    RELAX, it's over

Holy smokes, and I thought the 2 antlered and 2 antlerless bow limit in CT was liberal.

    USPS shipping delays

Ordered something from Cabelas in late November. Paid $5 shipping. They sent it via "SmartPost" (Fedex to USPS) and it still hasn't arrived. Another package from Cabelas ordered a few days before in November, arrived just a few days ago...

    Knaider swaider pros cons?

I tried them and the issue I have is you have to get a thigh length plus the step distance away from the tree. Takes more flexibility than I comfortably have and seemed like a recipe for a painful slam against the tree if something happened mid 'knaidering.' My current set up consists of two...

What will you change/improve for next year?

Definitely will be knocking off a few does early in the season. I got going with my bow in mid-October. Deer were everywhere, even in the middle of the day. I thought I'd have my freezer full in no time. I didn't really start getting up into trees until November. I got a buck early November, but...

How long does it take you to set up?

15-20 minutes to get unpacked, up, and settled in. But I'm mostly focused on stealth, not speed. I could do it much faster if I didn't care about banging, clanking and scraping!
