2019 Helium Mods

I have 3 different sets of heliums. Still modify them like I originally did in the beginning. Still the best stick out there (when modified) IMO and I've bought them all. I am working on a new mod, might release it before hunting season but want to give it some hunting time..... already way too many videos out there on gear never tested out hunting.

I just moved one of my sticks bottom steps up. I wanted a full 24” step but ended up just a little over 23” in order to keep enough metal between new holes and the slots

You can see the original location on the stick to the left. Those slots are in my way

@Gator how did you wrap/tie it to the stick? It looks like wrapped around button twice then two half hitches around the amstel coming around the tree? Is that correct?

Followed DaveT’s method. You pretty much nailed it but he makes sure to pass behind the other end of rope to start, then two loops around button followed by the two half hitches. He’s got a great video on YouTube

Thanks I will look it up.

What size amsteel are you guys using with these new sticks that come with versa buttons? are they the same buttons that LW uses and require 5/16 amsteel? Ive never done a rope mod and i just ordered 2 packs of heliums from midway and now im planning to order either that or regular 8mm static rope.

By the way midway has the heliums on sale for 83 bucks a pack right now

Trying to get @DanO to make some AlumiButtons that are 5/16 to fit on the 2019 heliums. IMO the AlumiButton is the best versa button around. It has a recessed bolt and works incredibly well with an 8mm rope mod. Y'all should message him and tell him how much you want them

On one of my modded sticks I put the hole pretty darn close to the slot. I was worried u get pressure it may take though. But on other mods In this thread some guys put the bolt right through the long slot, do you think that’s unsafe? To have the hole close to the slot, and also to go directly into the slot?

I do personally but it’s not from a bad experience or anything. Just new to modding this stuff and want to be cautious. I did specifically ask DaveT about it and he drills new holes versus using the slots

Yes I drill holes. I used the bottom steps then cut the stick as close to 24 inches as I can - then i drill holes for the upper steps (which are the middle steps moved up. I then reattach the upper tree bracket by drilling another hole and then a final hole for the versa button to keep it just above center. Don't over think this guys - just look at the stick and let it show you where to place the steps. I personally would not put them in a long slot where they could move.

DaveT1963 Thabks for posting. Great information/video. The new Heliums have a different size/shape button than the LW button. In your opinion do you think 1/4 in amsteel will work the same way you showed on this video?

I would think so, works on beast sticks

I have ordered the helium sticks. I am wanting to know if I can put a rope cam cleat on the helium just like the muddy pro stick. I have never seen in person, but the pictures of the helium post appear to have a ridge that would affect getting the cam cleat flush against the post. I am wanting to do this mod to 1 of the sticks to use for one stick method. Anybody tried this?

Gator---did you make your own amsteel daisy chain or is there some place I can get some

It’s easy. Just dry test the length BEFORE you make the chain. I have Gator crap for his being to short. Made new ones for me. That are.... almost too short. But I’m making new ones anyway with smaller amsteel when it shows up.

I used cut down knitting needles with electrician tape to hold the line. Follow Paul’s instructions. Super easy.

I tried my first one today using the small stuff with it doubled up the whole way. He doesn’t show it in the video so how do you finish the ends?

I had one longer than the other on purpose and buried the shorter end. Not as cool as say a buried Brummell on the slack end, but way easier.

Well here’s my attempt.

I buried it through the last loop, back out around the Brummell and then buried back in again. I think you can tell based on the thickness. Only issue is it made the last loop smaller and now it just barely fits over the versa button

Well, actually tried one of my sticks on a tree yesterday hanging a trail cam high. Really like the stick, but as expected, hate the straps. I was fumbling with it at ground level since I just needed one for getting the camera to the height I wanted. No way I'm messing with that on the top of my second stick.

Anyone done the rope mod on the 2019 versions and if so, what diameter rope (not necessarily amsteel) works well with the new button?
