2022 hyped up thread.

October 1st. I love the contest I encourage everyone to do it. It’s for fun and man some dudes (and ladies) get some hosses too it’s just neat to see and be supportive of your fellow team mates. Bowhunting to me is such an individual thing I like my “virtual deer hunting camp” with the contest. Im always hyped for bowhunting I’ve done a decent amount of pre season scouting and I’m incorporating cell cams this year for the first time so we’ll see if that is a benefit or not. Lastly, I’m really trying to focus more on identifying “double or triple spots” this year every time I plan on a hunt excursion. I’ve had some instances in the early season where I snuck in and “pushed” a couple of bucks they didn’t blow or really spook but the did move out and then im like what do I do. I hate that!! So im trying to identify a quick alternative decision making matrix for each location if something like that happens this year.

As far as bumping the bucks goes. My thoughts are to go over and hunt the spot where they were immediately if they didn't hard bump, meaning no tearing out of there or blowing, etc. I think a lot of the time they don't know what it was, they just heard something. You might try to let out a few turkey calls also to help them convince themselves it was a turkey and not a human. I have killed several big, mature does that way. Soft bump them, set up where they were quickly, and have them come back within the next three hours to the same spot. There was some reason they were at that spot.

Another tactic I have not tried but considered is setting up in a spot where I believe a buck would circle around to check the downwind of where I was when they busted out. If the buck wanted to confirm danger and not just bust out and leave the area he might try and get downwind of the noise using a button hook tactic.

I’ve done that too but the big boys don’t seem to return!!! During the rut anything goes for sure but I’m trying to focus on an early season beast.

That’s a great suggestion. I used to do that when I still hunted a lot during my early years bowhunting. I’d bump, then back off 50 to 75 yards and hook toward the way the we’re heading knowing they were trying to circle me it was a lot of fun but never thought about that with a saddle set up I’m thinking I’d take too long I need to get my system down faster.

Drawing of the month award right here. Love it.

I cannot wait for this deer season! September 24th opener here in Arkansas. Hopefully it’s not 90° on the opener. Pretty much my whole set up has changed so I’m ready to try it out. I’ve got a brand new bow, arrow, broadhead and release set up that’s shooting great. I’ve switched to a hip style pack along with getting some shikar fxd sticks. Im planning on doing a little scouting in the next couple weeks. Last year I started to connect the dots in some areas so I know where to focus my attention this year.

Well boys I’m not gonna lie I start getting excited as soon as my post season scouting is wrapped up and say by day I start counting the seconds till September 15th!!!!! This year by far has been my Most anxious pre season. I don’t run cameras but at least once a week I load the family up and go road scouting and the deer numbers up here in the northeast are INSANE this year seen 2 really nice bucks a good number of times lingering in fields just off of stand locations so yea I’m pumped!!!!

One of my biggest regrets was not doing this. Busted a big public land buck, in the 150s, on the way to a spot I was going to hunt. I figured I would continue to the spot since I busted him out at like 15 yards. On my way out from hunting that night I busted him in the exact same spot. If I would have just stayed there I would have had a good chance at him.

Kentucky is September 3, but I don't intend to hunt anywhere close to that. There is one buck I noticed recently in a field close to public that I might try to pattern... Maybe. I HATE hunting in heat, ticks, and thiiiick w/copperheads! It's just not enjoyable to me. But he sure is a beauty already. We'll see.

Being from Michigan, I was always used to an October 1 start... And that was usually too hot for my liking. Will probably try to do my doe hunting the first two weeks. I like getting serious about the second week of October. I would love an early frost this year.

10/1 here. Sooner if I can get permission on a reduction zone property. Not sure the best way to go about that. Not making too many changes equipment wise. Just need to practice with my equipment. I’m excited because I’ll be finishing up school next month and that should open up some free time to hunt this year.

So VA here so October 1st. I have not put any cameras out and do not chase a particular deer. Just try to set myself in likely spots every year. Going to also be hunting NC, and the opener for that is September 11th this year. Looking forward to a bit of pre season scouting as well on so deep public land spots.
I’m curious, do you just not use cameras? I’m reallllllly leaning towards not even messing with them this year. Is there a reason you don’t use them?

Second person I’ve noticed doesn’t run cameras. I’m really leaning towards not myself this year. Any reasoning on why you don’t use them? Thanks?

9/9 here and the buck I was chasing last year just showed back up. Just wrapped and fletched arrows last week. Need to get a one stick ordered and practice with that and increase my shooting. I am pumped and ready to go.

That's a tough break for sure and it is another example of my suspicion that they will often return to the same spot. I learned that lesson the hard way too.

I don't run cameras because I don't target individual bucks and can't justify the cost of cell cams. I hunt properties all over the state, and I'd need 6-8 cameras (I'd guess) just to cover my local spots to my satisfaction. Only have so much mental bandwidth and for me running cameras comes at the cost of not focusing as much as I should on what's developing in the dynamic deer world. Plans are great, but most of my deer and almost all of my bucks happen kinda spur of the moment. See him or his sign, immediately hunt it, kill him. No use for a camera in that scenario

I wish I could be like this. But with small children I gotta make every hunt count. Cameras make that much easier. If I court devote more weekends to scouting it would be different.
