2022 Shed Hunting Thread

found a bunch more. still nothing nice. bunch of small 3pts, 3 spike dead heads and a 8pt dead head. I think were up to like 14 sheds now including chewed up old ones. Havent found any big ones this year yet. i havent hit my lease yet. im sure my d-head neighbors have though. They have no shame poaching on it so shed hunting should be a given. if i was my old self i woulda gone full rambo in there with the booby traps

I threw an old shed out in the snow in the backyard a couple of weeks ago hoping one of my dogs would find it and get a nose for shed hunting. Its still buried out there somewhere. :tearsofjoy:

Guess I'm going to have to do it the old fashioned way.
Well if maybe if you’d quit closing their tails in the doors they’d help you hunt sheds lol!

I've been out 3 times scouting and I've done about 14 miles in those three trips. I haven't seen a shed yet. I think our bucks are still using theirs. I found this fresh rub on a charred pine. It had to have been made within the last two days since the burn. Maybe I will find one tomorrow.

I'm in a rut right now. I did find one little dead head the other day but no fresh sheds.

is there a standard place these antlers fall or is it just dumb luck wherever they fall? My friend found one on a old logging road when I was with him scouting and that was the only one I have seen on the ground.

you guys will usually have a later drop time then northern states from what ive heard. If there is any reason for them to have higher testosterone levels (later rut or still sparring), they wont drop yet. I just saw a stud holding both sides yesterday in MD and will see them hold into early april sometimes. Dont cross off areas where you didnt find any the first time. I will hit spots 4 or 5 times and eventually theyll drop there. gotta beat the other guys lookin so i always start early feb.
I find a lot when im looking for morels because it makes you go real slow and look close.

I tend to find more in feeding areas but they can literally be anywhere a buck would stand. I've found many over the years from the truck laying on the side of the road.

bedding areas close to food sources. Deer dont travel as far during winter months. field edges with thick stuff to hide up against.

if you can get a good vantage pint glassing fields will work for bigger ones too. Just gotta pan slowly. They blend in more than you would think

Find the bed, find the shed. I find most of mine by tracking them to their beds and then walking all the exit trails. Look for other fresh sign (tracks, poop, browse lines etc.) and slow way down when you find it. @Gator said it earlier in the thread, look behind you. It's surprisingly easy to walk right by a 60" antler.

Sounds like you're due for a good day. Those dry spells always make it that much sweeter when you do find one!

Nothing to brag about but I did find one.

Little yearling antler. Base isn’t any thicker than a nickel. Wish I could find a fresh one!
