2022 Turkey Hunting Thread

I’m in! Could also do like “best bird” and or the “most birds”. Be fun!
Even if we don’t and you kill a bird. Then don’t post it in here I’ll be sad. I wanna see some dead birds boys! I’ll hopefully start contributing April 2nd! Couldn’t go to Mississippi like I wanted

May is open season in NY. We can only take 2 birds and not on the same day. Hunt till noon.
Goes by quick! But i will be sure to post here if I take one!

We have the same one bird a day rule. Couldn't tell you how many times I've killed a bird and sat and watched another stand there gobbling or in one case, two of them gobbling. I normally hunt alone but I have doubled up with a friend of mine once. That was comical as we were slightly apart (each leaning against different trees) but trying to figure out who was shooting which bird. I ended up telling him to shoot and just hoped that the bird I was aiming at didn't fall over dead. Worked out that time!

I typically hunt alone but I do remember once hunting with a buddy we were surprised by a close gobble and just quick set up. Once we were set up I remember thinking, well we did not put a plan together at all so if he comes in I am not sure how long I'll let him stand there before my buddy gets the hint I want him to shoot LOL. It can get crazy quick. Now if I am hunting with him he is always up first.

The one we got to tote out of the swamp opening morning.

Yeah very impressive bird!

Have they been vocal for you guys hunting them already? How do you think the population is doing in your area?

Stopped the last two mornings listening and heard one gobbling on roost. Spring greenup is easily 4 weeks early around me which will likely make it a little more difficult than normal. Just over two weeks for me!

Once my 24" Carlson barrel gets here which it should in a week I can then shoot my 870 to see if it patterns any differently. Interested to see if it does. My 870 was my go to waterfowl gun for years with the 28" barrel but I had to get a shorter on now that its my exclusive turkey thumper.

Anyone have experience with changing barrels and did the gun pattern any differently?

Yea every barrel pattern a little different. I have 2 on my mossy. 1 is a stock 28 and the other is a custom 21. They both shoot good but the 21 shoots a little bigger even pattern which i like. Its not a carlsons. I forget the smith that makes em. My buddy has the same gun with the 28 and it shoots a little different qith the same choke.

How much did you pay for the carlsons. I might try to pick one up for my wife 870 20 ga

I pretty much just Bow hunt turkey's now but when I was seriously into run and gunnin', rather than change my barrels out completely, I had the forcing cones lengthened on both my stock 24" Ithaca Model 37 Turkeyslayer barrel and the Stock 26" 1187 barrels (but not at the same time). I believe the Ithaca was already back bored to some extent as well but what I found by just doing this, I could really shoot a lot of different varieties of copper or nickle plated lead shot very well. It really opened up possibilities. My favorite load out of the Ithaca was the old Activ #5's. The Remington always through the copper plated Duplex 4x6 loads extremely well. I added a Kick's Coyote Choke really developed for the "T" size shot loads but this combo patterns everything very very well for me up to and including 4 buck.
