2023-24 Trad Kills

Got a couple big nannies with the longbow yesterday out of the saddle. For everyone out there struggling with a traditional, don't get discouraged. I had a terrible year last year and wounded more deer than I care to share. I was really considering giving up traditional. This year I am 3 for 4 on shots. Just keep practicing and building confidence. Also shoot a Simmons tree shark. They are awesome! Screenshot_20231025-035347~2.png

Filled my doe tag this evening. Start my vacation on November 1st until the 15th, come on rut. I took the doe with a Black Hunter longbow 45# @ 28” and Big Jim Dark Timber 500 spine tipped with a 175 grain Steel Force 2 blade. Shot was 8 yards from a Recon sling. Double lung and a 30 yard recovery.

How's the trad team doing in the points race now?
Fell into 2nd last week or so with 64 points behind team 7 with 79 points, and barely ahead of team 1 in third with 62 points.

Based on the scores from this week that haven’t officially been counted up yet team 7 will increase their overall lead, team 1 will jump into 2nd, team 10 into 3rd with the trad team trailing in 4th.

Centaur super curve, lpp arrow, 200 gr grizzly sb. 12 yards. Hang on stand on private property. He went 50 yards. Dead in 15 seconds
How do you like the lpp shafts? I havent ever played with those. Went from cedar to doug fir. did play with a set of hickories years ago but that was very short lived lol. How do they compare weight wise to cedar or DF?

They are on average heavier than cedar and lighter than df. And way tougher than cedar. I think good lodgepole is the best shaft material I've shot. Recovers faster than df or larch, doesn't break easily like cedar and makes a decently heavy arrow. I build 29 or 30 inch arrows and with a 200 gr head they often weigh just short of 700 grains. I don't like sub 600 gr arrows for big game.

IMG_20231102_123100~2.jpgI got a little 8pt yesterday with my longbow. Definitely my best year so far with traditional gear. I should probably start being a little more selective on bucks but it is hard with the longbow. Fourth deer with the Simmons Tree shark and I am sold. They work great and I am only shooting a 43lb draw.

Still filling the freezer got me another one!! Practicing on the little ones they are harder to hit! And taste better to!!!View attachment 94275
How many yards was this one and how far did it run? Seems like most of your shots are pretty steep like the deer are right under you. Have they ran far with the arrow not passing through? What has your blood trail been like. Thanks in advance for the info!

Yeah I set up for close shots! it was 18 ft in my stand and it walked under me 8y out. I went through the opposite shoulder no bone except ribs arrow broke off. Deer ran in a 20y circle and dropped. Some blood not a lot. I'm thinking about getting Simon's broad heads tree shark's not really happy with the blood trails with the 3 to1 single bevel Grizzly blades. I get pass throughs if shots are 20y out but not down on hard angles. I just got back from WV almost got a doe out of my pacseat but got busted. The only bucks I saw were chasing 90mph no shots going back next weekend.

I talked to some guys who shot grizzlies for a while and the blood trail was the only complaint with them they had. Most I talked to killed piles of deer with them. For that reason I’m trying VPA 3/1 3 blades this year. Hopefully they’ll treat me right.
