Was able to tag a fine gobbling turkey an hour into season here at home.

Was not able to roost them last night due to the howling North wind, even though they are usually roosted behind the neighbor's house where I do not have permission to hunt. Waited and listened for a while trying to determine which way they were going to go this morning. Once they had hit the ground and made it known which direction they were headed I made my move.

As I came into a little hay meadow adjacent to the property they were on, I crow called to check their location. It seemed like they had moved away from the property line towards the neighbor's house. I slipped up the fence row (super thick with brambles and a few cedars. You cant even see through it. Out of the ~300' fence line, there is one 50' gap that's clear.) I made two soft bubble clucks and a 3 note yelp. The two gobblers hammer less than 50 yards on the other side of the fence and I legitimately dive into the fencerow for some cover and get the gun up. I thought I was screwed because I was over 70 yards from the gap in the fence row and just knew they would go there to cross the fence if they decided to. (Mind you in 3 years of hunting it I have never been able to get them to cross the fence.)

Maybe 30 seconds later I hear some noise coming from near the cedar trees 25 yards in front of me. Out pops one longbeard and before I can get the dot on him and pull the trigger the second one pops out. They both immediately pinned me so I let loose with 28 and rolled the back bird. Nothing special, just a typical 2 y/o 9" beard and 1" spurs. It ain't all about the size of the bird though.

Finally was out putting some different shells through the 870 12 gauge. I’ll be going with the 3in Winchester Long Beard XR shells in 6 shot with the Primos Tight Wad choke.

Didn’t end up buying any TSS. Should be good on distance with the XR.

Congrats to all the killers this year.

Thought I’d share this link that I found somewhere on the inter webs this year. It might have been in this thread.

David Halloran doing some Q&A. 30 minutes in and it will probably be my go to each season for a refresher course.

He’s right up in my neck of the woods. I have his metal mouth crystal and cherry slate….. awesome rasp and I call something in every year with them.

The chock is usually the dope. Good choice IMO. I use the 660 in the Jelly Heads. Sound like you are dialed in. Whatch out Sh...t Pickers!!

I used to make my own diaphragm calls with the call purfect system and it got lost in a move. Over the last couple of years I picked up the Festher Ridge jig and cutter, put out a couple
Last evening. They don’t sound too bad!! Both three reeders combo cut (ish) with a left side cut for my air channel. The green two .0025 thick reeds with a .003 combo cut, the orange two .003 backers with a .0025 combo cut. Little too raspy for a decent kee-kee to a Jake yelp but the purrs sound good. Small talk not bad I can get decent bubble clucks and fly down cackles. Purring is fine. Whines are a little raspier than I like but will work.IMG_2649.jpegIMG_2644.jpeg

Alright I've been hunting my whole life and never heard this term, now twice in two days. What influencer is reponsible? Who is running bubble clucks on their squawk rigs?

It is quite descriptive though in that I know exactly what you are talking about.
Seriously though, I think I first heard Dave Owens talk about them or saw it in an NWTF calling competition video. Just a short little click to do between purrs or while walking for the most part.

I went out again this morning with a friend to his hunt club. We got one fired up at the second spot we hit. Moved on the bird but it we should have been getting closer but he just kept sounding the same distance even though we were moving a good clip. I think he had hens, and they were dragging him away from us. We never could get close to that bird but not for a lack of trying. We ran out of property.

We decided to circle around and ended up getting stuck in a huge mudhole and bottomed the truck out on the frame. We had to walk about 2 miles and get a logger to come and drag the truck out of the hole. It was an interesting morning. We heard some gobbles but no bird.

Prepare yourself. Game changer.
I’ve always called them that it’s the only way to describe it. When clucking or putting I’m usually just able to make them with just tongue and lip pops with just mostly lip pops so I’ll purr with the flutter of the tongue usually then just push air out with my lips almost like starting to blow a bubble I’m pushing air from the back of my throat to my lips and the call is kind of wet sounding…. But it’s a noticeable bubbly sound when turkeys are close purring and such. So I’m the influencer!!!!! :tonguewink: :tonguewink: :tonguewink: :tearsofjoy:

Had 4 perfect opportunities on toms yesterday. All within 30 yds. The first 2 were at about 12 lol. Wife couldn't swing the gun around cuz of the position we were in expecting them to come from the last gobble. They were lookin at us like uhhhhhh.
We had left our decoy up the hill and they took off that way so we army crawled over to the path it was on...and got caught with our thumbs up our butts again. he Just tip toed away. with his neck stretched out.

She beat herself up pretty bad over it but id rather her hold off then spook a bird off the property forever.

I hadnt picked up a call since last season so there was a few interesting sounds made but hey they still thought i sounded sexy haha.

Hopefully this saturday i'll be able to find them again and she can add another notch on her belt.

I heard/learned from Dave Owens and Shane Simpson
