Was able to tag a fine gobbling turkey an hour into season here at home.
Was not able to roost them last night due to the howling North wind, even though they are usually roosted behind the neighbor's house where I do not have permission to hunt. Waited and listened for a while trying to determine which way they were going to go this morning. Once they had hit the ground and made it known which direction they were headed I made my move.
As I came into a little hay meadow adjacent to the property they were on, I crow called to check their location. It seemed like they had moved away from the property line towards the neighbor's house. I slipped up the fence row (super thick with brambles and a few cedars. You cant even see through it. Out of the ~300' fence line, there is one 50' gap that's clear.) I made two soft bubble clucks and a 3 note yelp. The two gobblers hammer less than 50 yards on the other side of the fence and I legitimately dive into the fencerow for some cover and get the gun up. I thought I was screwed because I was over 70 yards from the gap in the fence row and just knew they would go there to cross the fence if they decided to. (Mind you in 3 years of hunting it I have never been able to get them to cross the fence.)
Maybe 30 seconds later I hear some noise coming from near the cedar trees 25 yards in front of me. Out pops one longbeard and before I can get the dot on him and pull the trigger the second one pops out. They both immediately pinned me so I let loose with 28 and rolled the back bird. Nothing special, just a typical 2 y/o 9" beard and 1" spurs. It ain't all about the size of the bird though.
