2024 fishing thread

Got'em! Blacktailed Redhorse. Really, really, really strong fish for its size. Especially on a small, tight creek, you really feel like you have to stay on your toes with light tackle. A 12" redhorse will run absolute circles around any bass species I've hooked.

Pretty fish too. Reminds me of a redfish. Definitely will be experimenting with nymphing for them on fly tackle. I can see an obsession starting.

We used to catch a bunch of redhorse suckers growing up. Usually it was light trout tackle and small worms while trout fishing. Always fun when they make a run for the tree roots and you've got to turn them on light line. The biggest we'd catch were around 20-22" or so. They get some real shoulders on them at that length.

My wife has been telling me this spring that she wasn't in the right headspace to learn a new, irritating skill. Finally got her rested up and recuperated and out of mom-mode enough that she looked at people harassing the local pond fish and said, "Gimme that thing."

Took her all of 3 minutes to work out a pretty good cast and snag her first fish. After about her 5th, she was like, "This is kinda fun. I guess you get to upgrade your rod now."

So much for buying less stuff this year.

Also started working on a few flies tied with stuff I shot. I stumbled upon a small streamer that just uses a single wood duck flank feather and some tinsel. Using them to work on my patience and practice with the whip finish tool @BTaylor gave me.

They restocked a couple local ponds with trout the last couple weeks here. I had a first communion retreat with my son and a birthday party for my nephews today. We’ve got the deer classic to hit tomorrow but I’m hoping we can get out and find a couple next week. I was telling their grandpa on the other side about the restock and I think he would’ve left the party to go fish if his wife didn’t have the keys.

Got excited, not a lot of trout fishing around me, but grounded by a recent favorite @Nutterbuster line. “I recently started fishing for trout because I’d like to think I’m sophisticated, and I fish for crappie because deep down I know that I’m not.“

Good looking bug, sorta has a wax worm look to it. I would bet that gets your line pulled on the regular.

I made it out one evening last week. Mostly a shakedown run but this is the time of year that the bass start to get hungry. I’ve never caught bass in February before (it’s usually ice) but I can’t say that now. Managed two small ones and two pickerel. Not bad for February in NJ.IMG_0377.jpegIMG_0382.jpegIMG_0379.jpegIMG_0376.jpeg

I like that rod holder you have there! Need to find me one of those

mariner Sails. 4-rod horizontal rod holder (track mounted). About $40.

Yakgadget has a similar and maybe better one in the Flexrod Stager system. They only offered the 2-rod plus paddle option when I was rigging mine 3 years ago. Now they have a 4-rod version for $50 that looks more subsantial than this one (not that I've had any problems) and is also adjustable for how far over the edge it hangs.
