8mm Oplux questions & uses

Nice! I have to measure the tag ends of my 60cm to see if I have 10 cm I can do without. Gray color looks better / more muted.

How do you like the schwabisch? Do you feel keeping it properly dressed is any issue? I felt the distel was easier as ends were coming out of opposite sides. Thoughts on this?

I forgot to add that I have tried the Schwabisch with the tag ends coming out of opposite sides and it works just fine, but I’m not sure if there is a reason not to do so ?

I hate this place. I've been trying like mad to save money but I broke down and ordered a couple jammys. I love how compact the oplux is but been feeling sketched about using the Ropeman 2 on my tether with the 8mm. It holds but just doesn't seem to pass the common sense test I'd rather go to friction hitch.

Oh and by the way Backcountry has 20% off (only two were left in stock) coupon code CLIMBCAMP20

Not being argumentative, but if the Beal jammy is backup, why not just use it and tender instead of ropeman. Before I moved away from ropeman, I used prusik as backup. It just seemed too many moving parts.

What friction hitch are you using? If prusik, it is worthwhile to try a distel, schwabisch or klemheist. They don’t get locked up like a prusik does.

Good question. I got the Jammy with intentions to use a tender BUT... I have not been able to get a tender to work for me. I really wanted it to work but I can't get the tender to unlock the friction knot quick enough to help when I am in an extreme lean.

Do you mind sharing which friction hitch you use, e.g., prusik, klemheist? That would be good for us all to know.

Whatever works for you is what to use. We all have our own ways of doing things.

I tried a prusik and Klemheist. I did not want to cut the jammy to try a distel hitch. With the ropeman I can "bump" towards the tree and take out slack. That method does not see to work with a tender because of the slack in the tender. With no hands the "bump" is the only way I know how to take slack out of the linesmans belt. I could pull myself towards the tree but that becomes a two handed operation.

Attach your pull cord like this and you won’t have trouble retrieving your rope. This issue with a figure 8 is the occasional hassle setting your rope. The knot can be challenging to get over the crotch on some trees.

Add a small prusic with paracord or whatever to the spot on the loop marked in the picture , then clip the pull rope to that. Works wonderfully well!

Sounds like there is to much leg in your friction hitch and/or tender. Go back and look at my post #146 in this thread. The less leg in everything the better it operates.

Pull down rope for rappel works much better if connected to the tag end of your rappel rope. Where I circled in green.

AGREED! However, you know this way has a greater chance of you having to pull the loop end over the branch or through the crotch. Higher risk of getting rope stuck. So the method I suggest above is my default plan. If the tree looks safe enough for your suggestion, I would do it.

Forgive my ignorance but why are you guys using prussic or similar rope devices instead of using a kong duck etc?

I have a kong duck for my oplux and I like it so far.

A prussic is more economical, however if you're buying Oplux you're not worried about cost.

The prussic is a more appropriate choice for fall protection. The Kong Duck is not rated for fall arrest so you should never introduce slack into a system that is dependent on the Kong Duck to catch you.

Ducks and Ropemans are very convenient, but a prussic with a tender can be just as good for some.

Not sure if it will work for you, but the best tender I have tried is a 5” long Dynaglide soft shackle. I use the TacBlades improved shackle method.

Why does it seem the beal jammy is the only prussic that can be used for the oplux? Are there other, non purple options lol.

That is a saddlehunter thing. Once something catches on around here....

The jammy is a nice piece of rope and has an excellent rating for its size, but any rated cord that is about 5.5mm-6mm should work for the Oplux.

I'm using the Kong Duck for my lineman rope (OpLux) when using sticks. Hoping to use SRT or single stick more this year.

Will use a prussic of 6mm Sterling TRC (on the way) on my OpLux tether but will keep a Beal Jammy in the kit too since they are so small and can be used for multiple purposes. The TRC prussic cord looks to be natural/tan colored.

After I have tested the TRC a little more that is what I am going to roll with, it releases easier that the Jammy after loading it up. I will always have a jammy in my pocket, just to handy. Plus I use it as an autoblock below my Safeguard when rappeling.

Looks like the sterling trc 6mm is impossible to find sold by the foot. Did you guys just buy a spool?
