Grrrrrrrrr.... say it aint so. No wonder you took meat, those things are so stinkin sharp I always cut between the ribs and cut gut:eek:
Yeah. They are insanely sharp. I'm going to wear fish fillet gloves ( those chain mail type gloves) when I do the last part from now on.

Gotta.... I've only ever cleaned 2 so I'm inexperienced.... If I had a hand injury like that I be outta work and starving.... Just wondering if there was maybe a blade style that maybe more suited.

As an inexperienced deer cutter upper maybe this a.stupid question....couldn't u cut the esophagus at the bottom of the neck so u don't have to work blind inside the chest?

The only people who ever show me what to do was utube people....no one ever showed me in person.....

Yes. You could do that. If you are ok with a European mount or it's a doe, that's a great option

You can do it that way but not gonna make your taxi happy if you want a shoulder mount and two its a great way to dull your knife. Hair isnt good on knives plus risking hitting bone. Other option is splitting the rib cage so you can see better but then you know risk cutting yourself now on sharp bones and just made your taxi mad again.

It doesn't take much more than a scalpel, if that, to sever a tendon in the hand or worse your wrist.

Big thing is to not go into a cavity you can't really see on with the cutting edge down if you're other hand is grabbing your target organ. Rotate your wrist so the edge is facing away and up from your hands. Lower blade till it hits your target and then rotate back when your sure your hand isn't under the knife.
I watched a guy cut the deers throat from the outside and then just reach in and grab it. He didn't need to reach in with both hands to do the job from the inside so he didn't get bloody to the elbows, or risk a cut. Obviously you can't do this with something your going to mount. Also if you pull the hides with a vehicle you can't do it this way because you may pull the head off, I've seen this too.

What was that process? Skin it back and tediously pick thru the pipes and get the right 1 or jack the ripper style?

I'm usually good for one or two cuts a year but never that deep, ouch! The cold weather when my hands are numb is the worst. When I reach up in the chest, I grab the esophagus, heart, lungs, diaphragm, etc. and actually guide the blade down to that hand with my knife hand so I know exactly where/how the blade is oriented. Once I have a firm grip on what I'm cutting I make sure I cut away from the holding hand.

Yeah. This is going to be my new way. I euro mounted this guy anyway.....just did it the standard way by habit. I've seen guys cut the ribs from the sternum to get more access, but I could see myself just cutting myself a different way with that method.

No wonder he is sticking his tongue out at you...he got the last laugh :tearsofjoy: I usually cut myself once every couple of years but usually just a nick. Hope it don't ruin the rest of the season for you. Nice buck too by the way.

Jack the ripper style. I never adopted the method myself because I'd pull the hide with a vehicle but he made it look super easy.
