Another tick thread

I grew up in PA and it was pretty rare to see ticks from my recollection. I live in Indiana now and we won't even go in the woods in the spring on our hunting spots because the ticks are so bad.

Years ago, before we knew better, the wife and I took our dog on a 10 mile hike in one of the state forests during springtime. I'd never seen so many ticks in my whole lifetime combined as I did that day. We easily pulled 100 of the dog alone and were finding then for days afterwards crawling around the house and car.

There's a lot of scary stuff you can catch from them now even aside from Lyme's disease. There is even one kind, I think it's a lone star tick, whose bite can turn you allergic to meat.

This sounds like a storyline for a horror movie with a terrible ending, allergic to meat, what the heck.

Do you guys use permethrin during season? I guess if you do, scent of it will be strong and wind direction is critical in the stand. We had so many on us last year we probably will have spray it this year. I hate the strong smell. Scent control is another thread. ....LOL

Definitely sounds odd. I think I'd quit trying to figure it out and just sing praises to the heavens without ceasing and then continue to sing praises without ceasing. Everywhere I hunt is loaded with the little buck-toothed monsters and they all conspire to find my nuts.

I have had that happen also.

You can spray the permethrin it will last for a long time.

I've spent I don't know how many hours in the woods my entire life and I can only remember getting maybe 10 ticks on me. With only 3 that I can remember attaching to me. I guess we just don't have that many in south Louisiana. Chiggers are a different story. Do you guys who live in areas that have lots of ticks have to get treated for Lyme disease? How do you know if you have Lyme disease? I don't know if I could stand living in a place that I had to worry about them nasty little boogers getting on me. And now that I've posted in this thread I'll probably get 10 tomorrow

I don't recall ever seeing a tick in S. LA either. I'm originally from CA and in the springtime they were everywhere.

I for sure got a nasty little tick bite this year in KY. Good news is I’m just allergic; Lyme is not prevalent in SC KY, so my infectious disease doc felt pretty sure I wouldn’t need a doxycycline run. I had some issues with antibiotics awhile back to avoiding them is best. But ALWAYS get opinions from your care providers. Lyme is nothing to mess with.

A few years ago my brother came down with ALS. While researching it, we read that Lyme can mimic ALS and over 300 other diseases.

If you have to operate in tick habitat, the best preventative is permethrin.
The stuff works wonders. We don't have chiggers but I hear it works well for those, too.

Even through washing?
That's what they say.
You can also buy clothing that's pre-treated. Treatment on some brands lasts 70 washings. Buzz Off is one brand.
There's a brand (can't remember the brand, maybe Insect Shield??) that you can send YOUR clothing to them and they will treat it...good for many, many washings.

There was a thread on another forum a few years ago and a post basically said this...
There are 2 types of permethrin...water based and oil based.
After the water based completely dries, it's odorless.
The odor of oil based permethrin lasts because the oil doesn't completely dry.
The oil stuff is better for structures and stuff.
The water based is better for clothing and animals.

Brand is ELIMITICK.

I love it. People hunting the exact same areas get ticks & I’m not. I always did until trying Elimitick.

I’ve used it last 2 yrs in FL and no ticks.

I’ve watched them get on me & then just drop off to get away.

Yeah, that's right...Elimitick is one of the brand's. My buddy has clothes from them. Works well. I forgot about that brand until you mentioned it.

I have factory treated pants from Rail Riders...I think rated for 70 washings.
Well designed, high quality pants.

I'm pretty sure that "Insect Shield" is the company that will treat YOUR garments. New, used...you can turn most any of your garments into a "lifetime" treated garment. Can't remember what it costs.

If I remember correctly Elimitick is 60-70 washings. They recommend Cold water wash & dry on Low to keep the repellent in the fabric as long as possible.

We have both ticks and chiggers and they are really bad. I’ve had the chiggers so bad that literally used my soldering iron and burned each one of them because the burn was much better than the unbearable itching and the burn healed in a couple of days. The itching would go on for two weeks.

I started buying a generic, concentrated permitherine on Amazon. It will make around 20 gallons of permitherine. I mix a gallon at a time in a pump sprayer. Then I spray my work cloths and hunting clothes about three times per year. Then I only wash those clothes by hand. (Permitherine gets washed out of your clothes because of the agitation) I can go into the thickest brush cutting trail by hand and not get a tick or chigger on me. A couple of times I have found a tick inside my clothes but it as dead and never attached to me. I’ve the last couple of weeks my sons and my FIL have been out the with me and they end up with ticks like crazy and I have none. I keep trying to talk them into spraying their clothes but they keep avoiding it.

I believe permethrin is most degraded by heat. @IkemanTX mixes his in a bin and dunks his clothes in it. I know you can buy it in large quantities of concentrate much cheaper than you can get it from Sawyer already pre-mixed. And it would make sense for it to be much cheaper to do it the way Ike does it versus sending your clothes off to be treated. I don't know much about the difference between water and oil-based but he may know.
