Anybody figured out a way to lighten a Doyle's gear hoist

For those that wanna go light and ditch the hoist, daisy chain your para-cord guys. Its not auto-retracting but it does play itself out nicely as you climb so you don't have a big tangled wad.

I'm using a retractable dog leash with the clutch removed and a short section of Paracord for added length

Would an auto retracting fly fishing reel work or be too light? I'm one of those guys that somehow uses paracord and it's never bothered me but seems like that could work and shave some weight.

I know its not a Doyle's hoist but this has worked well for me this year. Add inexpensive and lightweight and its suits my needs. I have just attached the plastic paracord spool to a carabiner on my saddle. It stays there all the time so I never forget to take my pull up/ rope retrieval rope with me.

Before I climb I attach the keychain biner to my gear. As I climb the paracord pays out but because it hangs at an angle the cord only pays out as needed. After I pull up my gear I attach the biner to my rappel rope for retrieval so I don't forget to do it before I rappel down. I just loop the spool though my bow limb a couple of times to lower it. The spool keeps the cord from tangling and its quick, easy and quiet. Just another approach as an option.

I use a camp clothline from wal mart. I love it. Probably wont let me post the pic. Feeds out as I climb and wind it back up

I got the doyles and was hesitant to use it because of the weight and possible noise from the hard plastic hitting something and though my paracord w/biner was good enough and lightweight well after having the paracord knot up constantly, get twisted and kinked and having the biner break sending my muzzloader nose diving into the mud I went to the Doyles and won't look back, it just works. I hooked it onto a small bag thats attached to my saddle though I may experiment with having it on my pack instead.

The doyles hoist coupled with a gear grappler also enhances safety. If you drop something essential like a movable aider you can pick it up off the ground.

Don't do what I did. I was looking for an alternative to the hoist. So I actually took it apart snd used the string. My first trip out I instantly regretted it. The string got tangled and twisted, it was a giant mess. I tried 550 cord next, same crap, twisted and tangled.

After that I ordered a 2nd doyles gear hoist. I won't be taking this one apart. The added weight is nothing compared to the headache of the string

25 ft of 1/8 amsteel. retraction is manual but it is super lightweight and doesn't tangle. I have rubber gear wire on one end that I wrap around my bow and a tied loop on the other that I clip on a carabiner.

I just put a Doyle’s on my mantis saddle I don’t think I’d mind it’s weight. I even thought about getting the summit gear hoist for my climber but got a high point gun holder instead. I don’t need a pull up rope with my climber because my bow fits in the gun holder and doesn’t go anywhere as I climb

I just started using a Doyle’s I love it, I put it in a pocket on my back pack and cut a hole to run the cord out the bottom then swapped out the plastic hookup for a small carabiner.... now with out taking my pack off I can reach behind me grab the biner clip it to my bow and start climbing, the hole in my pack will eventually get weak but it’s a cheap pack I’m using for now but a metal gromet made into the pack would be ideal.

Good decision! you will like it. ….almost as good as a "Huck Hoist".........…..almost.

I have mine in the center of my back on my Kestrel. It's very easy to find, very quiet, you don't even know it's there. I have a new Kestrel and they must have widened the molly loops because the Doyle's hoist fits in perfect.
