Anyone else ever stumble across the ridiculous flashlight hobby?

My neighbors have been using these to walk their dogs at night. First time they went out I thought a swat team had come to the neighborhood. It’s an awesome tool, but like everything needs to be used with respect and understanding.

Another reminder that you fellow degenerates are hard on the wallet! Actually not, I'm glad I found these 18650 beasts. Big step up.

Last year bought a zebralight headlight and a thrunite handheld that throws a tight beam. Good combo, but needed to make some adjustments.

Zebralight is floody and just felt unless I had it on turbo I couldn't see well enough to navigate unfamiliar places without a beam.
And I don't really think flashlights spook deer much but I don't to light up the whole place at the same time. Also missed having a red beam as thats what I usually climbed with. I like the zebralight its a shame they don't make one with a red light also.

Just picked up baby #3, a Fenix that has all those features. Gotta get used to the new UI but loving it so far. Next on the wishlist is something to replace my 25 year old hand me down spotlight.

I purchased an Astrolux FT03 (SST40 5000k version) as my spotlight replacement and I couldn't be happier. Single 21700's are the best for it, easy to finder higher discharge 21700s than 26650's, at a cost of a little less run time but I have not found that to be an issue. I just 3d printed a quick spacer to go around the 21700 to take up the extra space in the tube.

What happened to make you dislike them? I only have their keychain light (Tube V2), it is tiny and usb rechargeable which is awesome. I have had it one my keys for almost a year. It puts off enough light to walk out of the woods with as a backup. They have some decent looking bigger lights but I've never handled one.

Well when I ordered the light, it came with 2 18650 batteries separate in a package. When I opened the battery package, one immediately had thermal run away in my house and almost burned my dog down. Thank god it was not on my head. Then there is the issue where most 18650 batts wont turn the thing on. I have to take out and reinsert and screw cap super tight for there to be a connection. It could work fresh off the charger, throw it in my pocket,
Head to hunt, then it not turn on and its games time. It could work in morning, then at dark coming down/getting back to truck, it wont work again but batteries are good. Basically an unreliable POS based off of my personal experience.

Cool, thank you for the info. I only use Samsung batteries. Typically the light 'branded' batteries are garbage copies.

The good news was that amazon let me keep the items and sent me a full refund. I have found different types of 18650 batteries work better. Something to do with how much of a bump there is on the + side of batt. I will say, when it works, it works really well as far light out put.

For me, self-defense is the most unusual use of a flashlight with strobe light. In the course of research on using a stroboscope as a means of self-defense, it was found that the best effect is observed when the light source is dynamically moved, which is why the attacker cannot determine where the light comes from is even more disoriented. This tactic is most effective at a range of up to 8 meters. Thus, the attacker practically does not see all your movements or incorrectly recognizes them, which is why he cannot fight back or attack you. We are talking about small compact lanterns like these https://www.amazon.com/Vont-Flashlight-Flashlights-Water-Resistant-Accessories/dp/B089T8HDBV.

It should be noted that with a fixed location, the stroboscope haas a smaller disorientation effect. However, the time that an attacker may need to restore vision is quite enough for you to escape from the collision site. Thus, you can leave the lantern in front of the attacker and escape, saving your life and winning at least a little time.

Anyone stumble across the ridiculous flashlight hobby thread, and wish they could get back the half hour? Can someone distill this thread down to an application useful for hunting, mainly compact light to pack for evening tracking jobs, give as much light as possible, AA, AAA, or rechargeable, <$60? Any favorites fit this?

No.

It's a complicated topic. Decide where "ridiculous" is too much for you. 500 lumens? 1000 lumens? And then there are all the battery/power options. Sorry, not simple. You have to make the cut yourself.

This is the best one for hunting I've found. You'll never go back to AA or AAA powered, when ya know, ya know.

Awesome. Felix hm60r it is. Writing it down on my gear list for next season.

The fenix lights are awesome. I got the hm70r last year & can confirm you won't want to go back to AA or AAA. Not only is it awesome to use a rechargeable one but these batteries last so much longer on a much brighter light than anything I tried before this.

I did not tead all of the 131 posts but I took the opposite direction. I am not looking to light up a airport. I need the least amount of light to get to my stand.
I wanted a light that would work with a standard battery. Any place that sells battery's will have AAA.
The Peak Eiger will work with Alkaline, Lithium or NHM Rechargable 10440 3.7 volt Lithoum ion. If it fits it works. Plus made in the USA. I got the stainless steel body. They have several options on body material. This light has total variable output, twist the head and the output increases.Screenshot_20230216-185701_Gallery.jpg
