From the top of my knee to the bottom of my foot is 25 inches 8 steps then my ring of steps gets me to around 17 to 18 feet.

You must be really tall! The length of cubit is based on length from bottom of foot to knee or elbow to tip of middle finger or an average adult male. It is around 18”. It also correlated to how high one can step up without difficulty. IMO, that is why most sticks have 18” or less spacing. And you have 25”. Looks like sticks won’t give you the spacing best fit for your body.
Oh, and to be on topic, I used strap on steps years ago, not a fan. I do use sticks and Stepps now.
I have 24-1/4" from bottom of foot to tip of thigh (measured for a bike fit I had) and I'm 6' even. I don't think it has anything to do with height. Body proportions are highly varied. Long legs, short torso etc. That's why there is an average and mass produced equipment is generally made for the lowest common denominator, not the average. Companies want to sell to the widest market they can. Also, the cubit was developed when the average height of a male was like 5' 6" or something like that.
This is the exact opposite of my experience. I've tried 4 different climbing sticks and prefer strap on steps. They are more pack friendly, and I climb just as high with 10 strap on steps as I would with 4 climbing sticks all with aiders. Different strokes.
Measurement to tip of thigh is probably not same as “cubit” measurement. I am a hair under 6’ and my cubit measurements, foot to knee and elbow to tip of middle finger are both 18”. So I am average in cubit length on both accounts.
Care to share your measurement from elbow to tip of middle finger? Just curious, not trying to be argumentative.
With variability comes statistics and standard deviations (assuming bell shaped curve). Most of a population (with bell shaped statistical curve) will be with plus/minus 2 to 3 standard deviations. With that, I think a mfr. keeping step height under 18” covers a vast majority of the populations minimum needs. At least that is how it works out in my mind. . Looking back, I think we are saying the same thing, just in different ways.
Glad you like the strap on steps. Did you ever try Stepps? Kind of like strap on steps, but bigger and can get two feet on one If you angle your feet. I think I am too heavy and clumsy for the smaller strap on steps, but Stepps work fine for me.
Thx
I agree.I actually love the Cranford rope steps. If you use them like the owner demonstrated in his YouTube video, they will get sufficiently tight. As far as speed goes, yes there are more parts to affix to the tree than sticks, but if you carry them in a satchel, you just walk up to the tree and start climbing—no unpack/pack up time like you have with sticks. So I’d say it’s close to a draw time-wise between steps and sticks. Plus, steps are lighter and more compact.
